Kind of. Spurs had a terrible season in 1996 where they ended up tanking after a D Robinson injury, but they had made the playoffs seven straight years before that. The core of that 1999 championship team was already onboard when they drafted Duncan. (Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, Will Perdue, David Robinson). But I 100% get your point here.
I think 2012 (Ferry's first year here), should have been our bottoming out season. If we'd dumped Smoove and Teague for picks...and just embrace being terrible for one year...you could be looking at KCP & Giannis as Hawks for a decade. But I digress.

...and Teague. Teague and Millsap combined can get value. Sacramento is desperate for a playoff run. ORL is desperate for a playoff run. MIL is desperate for a playoff run. UTAH is desperate for a playoff run. They each have too much youth, and are in need of proven vets.
But, yeah. it's tough. We've screwed up so many draft picks the last 5 years. With that said...Thabo, Korver & Tiago are good locker room guys. And if we can pull a Hayward, Oladipo, Valanciunas, or Julius Randle caliber of young player in return...it keeps us competitive while lowering payroll, extending our window and focusing on their development.
But there is no single, cure-all move. More just long-range set of moves and strategies to embrace.
