I doubt we could use it on Luol as it would negate his bird rights with us and he likely wants and will be offered a multi-year deal.

I was thinking that if has to retire and it is certified by the NBA and Bosh himself he basically turns into an expiring contract that comes off the books Feb X, if I'm reading the CBA right.

We can't use the MLE if we keep Whiteside, since we have to use cap space to sign him.

We can use Deng's Early Bird Rights to sign him up to just over $13m (130% of previous salary), so there. But again it comes back to what happens with Whiteside.

If we are not happy playing Bosh, but he doesn't want to retire, then perhaps it's worth looking at dumping him on one of the 22 teams that will have enough space to absorb his salary.

1. You are right about Deng. We have his early bird rights, but his hold on the cap reduces our cap space. We really have a serious issue with how we should proceed. I've worked on this a lot and can't figure out anything unless Wade takes a substantial hit for us to sign Deng.

2. The DPE is available to all teams *after* the season starts. It's not waived like the other exceptions to create cap space. It's the same value as the non taxpayer MLE. It's value is $5.628 million and I think we'll be able to sign someone like JJ for that price.

Can we use the DPE if Bosh is going to retire? The way I read the Larry Coon site made it sound like we couldn't (but I did misread the bit about the medical retirement waiver :D )

It's one or the other:

1. Heat & Bosh decide it's a career-ending injury, ask league & player's association to evaluate (it's their doctors, not Bosh's or the Heat's that make the decision), and a year after his last game (because he played more than 10 games this season), the salary comes completely off the books.

OR

2. They continue to treat it as an injury. Bosh stays on the team without playing for the year. We get a DPE up to the $5.628M to spend on a player and wait until the end of the year to discuss retirement.

"Retirement" is a fuzzy concept in the NBA since its most famous player retired, went off to play baseball, came back to win 3 championships, retired again, and returned for 2 seasons for the Wizards.

I'm not really sure which is the best option. I still think Bosh will try to come back actually. A patient's determination is the most important factor in a case like this.

does anyone know if Bosh is still on blood thinners, & if he is, is he required to stay on them forever, or only for a certain amount of time?

Thanks in advance. :)
