EDIT: I tried to post a tweet in which Dikembe Mutombo congratulated Philly on winning the #1 pick (hours before the draft lottery), but it looks like he deleted it. If Philly wins, we gotta riot.

Nah man. Dikembe knows something.

Well there's your conspiracy if they won. NBA tells Philly to end this tanking madness and they will get a #1 pick. So they hire Colangelo and force Hinke out. Now Dikembe's social media team accidentally posted the tweet immediately instead of scheduling it for later after the lottery show.

I don't see a reason why they wouldn't do this. As a Bulls fan I'd be a lot more interested in watching this show if all 14 spots were up for grabs. As it is, I don't think I'll go out of my way to watch.

Because in the scenarios where a legitimately horrible team drops below a team that just missed the playoffs, owners aren't going to be happy.

I think the current system is fair. Maybe there should be a rule against consecutive lottery wins (to prevent repeat winners like Cleveland and Orlando from years back), but that's about it.

I don't know if I buy that. They have been talking about all sorts of lottery reform, and this idea is pretty conservative compared to the other ideas that have gained traction.

Again, if its still weighted as heavily as I suggested, the chances of Philly dropping very far is slim to none. And the times that a good team goes ahead of a legit bad team will be few and far enough in between to cause much of an uproar. Where this proposal becomes interesting is when you start getting to like the 8th or 9th pick, and teams like the Bulls have a chance to jump up a few spots.

I think that's the main flaw. Owners will look at it as "Why do we give a 42 win team a bigger chance to move up in the draft?"

The lottery is usually set to help the legitimately bad teams. The 13th and 14th place teams don't come across as such.

One idea I think most can agree would be terrible: Mike Greenberg said on the radio that he is in favor of giving the best team to not make the playoffs the #1 pick. Obviously this year it would work out because the Bulls would get #1, but can you imagine teams tanking their way out of the playoffs to get the #1 pick because they know they are going to get swept by the Warriors or Cavs anyways?

...or Dikembe mistakenly thought the lottery had already occurred because someone posted something about them winning on social media.

Which is more likely?

The NBA lottery is not rigged, but of course everyone likes a good conspiracy theory.

So the worst teams have a better shot at getting to the performance floor average of the rest of the teams?

Lottery isn't rigged. They put 4 numbers on each ball, representative of each team. The process doesn't start until 7ET and will finish by 7:45 or 8ET.

And the lotto doesn't need to be reformed IMO. From an owner and league perspective, its better that way. More tickets are bought when teams are fighting for their playoff lives. The worst teams should have the best shot at the best players first since they need the most help.

Next thing you know, people are going to request that the 1st place teams get a top pick because they worked their butts off and should be rewarded

Was playing around with Tankathon just a bit ago and got this. This seems mutually benefical for both sides.

If I rigged the lottery, this is the video I'd make for public consumption.

I probably wouldn't tell Mutombo the results ahead of time though. That was dumb of them. Pointless really.
