top 2 or GTFO
That was tongue in cheek.
32 year old Melo can't net us a top 5 pick, let alone top 2.
We should trade him for picks though.
But we won't.
Because...Knicks.
IDK, is anyone in this draft really going to be better than Melo in 4 years? Depends on the trajectory of the team. Boston should trade the #3 pick for Melo if offered, though I wouldn't really want it to be honest. I don't think there's a dead-on pick that we could take.
Boston is on the cusp of having a really good and deep team. Adding the #3 pick would give them yet another young, non-go-to player to develop. They ain't got the time for that. If they had a choice between Adding Carmelo Anthony to the roster for 3 years at a below-market-value deal or drafting a guy that's unproven at #3, then they should take the former.
IDK about trading #1 for Melo, but trading #3 for Melo in this draft makes sense for where Boston is at.
I'd like to add that I think trading Melo for high draft picks is a good idea for us because our team is at a different point in our trajectory. Boston already has a deep roster with an all-star player and some really good role players. They've got a great defense, and good bench. They are right on the cusp. We are nowhere near that cusp, and have young stud to build around. They don't have that luxury.
Our ceiling is somewhere in the distant future with KP as the #1 option. Their time is right now. Going young, acquiring high draft picks, and building our asset pool to maybe make some big trades down the line and build a contender that way will end up being more fruitful most of the time for our team rather than maxing out on free agents like Rondo and Kent Bazemore.
IF, and that's a big if, Phil can swing a deal for a difference maker(who do we have to trade?) or if we can get a big name FA like Durant or Westbrook(why on Earth would they ever sign here?), then it's a different story. But there's nobody on the market that puts us into contention. Melo, on the other hand, would probably do that for Boston....especially given the fact that they have enough cap to sign another star... imagine that team adding Melo AND Dwight this offseason?
Thomas, bradley, smart, crowder, zeller, Melo, Dwight is a great two-way core. They'd be a huge threat to anyone.
