If KD goes to GSW and Chicago wants Ainge to overpay for Butler in Ainge's shoes, I say go fly a kite in less diplomatic terms.
At that point Boston just has to focus on being the clear 2nd best team in the EC and praying that key players on Cleveland and GSW get hurt.
If the Celtics get bad news tonight, Celtics still have a chance to win a title without KD....Ainge just needs luck and to make a few really good moves sooner before the trading deadline.
I like your optimism, but how? This team with no KD isn't even a legit "contender" nevermind winning a title. Only way this team enters legit "contender" status and actually wins a title is if we put a Top 15 NBA talent(at minimum) on this roster by the start of the 2017 playoffs. Who, other than possibly Cousins, is even possibly available? Everything rides on Durant for the 2016-2017 season...........no ifs, ands or buts about it. This team is not a contender..........yet. Not being a hater, simply keeping it real.
Butler is a top 15ish player and I think he goes on sale before the deadline if Chicago sees the writing on the wall. Nerlens Noel may be a nice get as well before the deadline for a cheap price.
Celtics would be a darkhorse but with 1 or 2 good moves before the deadline could position themselves to
1) upset the Cavs if the Cavs don't come to play well or the Cavs suffer an injury to a key player like Irving/TT. Cavs obviously done with Lebron injury.
2) GSW with KD obviously far superior if healthy but their bench would be bad and if they suffered an injury to a top 4 player in the playoffs, they would be vulnerable to a Celtics team that could legitimately be 9 deep.
Without KD, I am not optimistic about the Celtics being a _title favorite_ but with good moves, I do think Ainge can position themselves over the next 2-3 years to have a decent chance to get lucky and win a title.
Personally speaking I think the Cavs got a little lucky this year after having some bad luck the previous year. Weak east and GSW breaking down/Green suspension at the right time.
Celtics would need even more luck than the Cavs but it could happen.
