Offseason review

Post#1 » by Nolan » Wed Aug 10, 2016 1:21 pm

Well the offseason is more than likely over for us now and since things have really died down I thought now would be a good time for you guys voice your opinions on the moves we made.

A little breakdown of the moves:

Out:
-Tim Duncan - Retirement :(
-David West - Signed in GS
-Boban Marjanovic - Signed in Detroit
-Boris Diaw - Traded to Utah
-Matt Bonner - Free agent

In:
-Pau Gasol - Free agency
-Dewayne Dedmon - Free agency
-David Bertans - Signed draft pick
-David Lee - Free agency
-Dejounte Murray - Draft
-Livio Jean-Charles - Signed draft pick
-Olivier Hanlan - Rights acquired in trade
-Patricio Garino - Free agency
-Bryn Forbes - Free agency
-Ryan Arcidiacono

My take:

Losing Duncan hurts (a lot) and replacing him with Pau means that our interior D is going to take a step back, how big of a step is debatable though and I really feel like Dedmon is going to be able to fill a large part of that gap that Duncan left. But as much as Pau's defense worries me I'm excited to see how he fits in on the other end. His offensive rebounding, soft touch around the rim, passing and low post game are all going to add some interesting dimensions to our offense.

As for the other guys extremely excited to see what Dedmon can do with more minutes and while I hate the fact that Lee is a pylon on the defensive end the guy can still get buckets and boards. I don't really see any of the young guys having big impacts this year but I think we grabbed a great project with a ton of potential in Murray and I also think that Bertans could turn out to be a valuable piece for us this year.

Overall I'd say we did well considering our options but our guards still worry me and I would of liked to see us do something to shore up those issues.

So what do you fellas think about our summer??

Well, I think it's safe to say that we're going to have less impressive record this year.
We have many new guys, so there will be a long accomodation process and some of them will end up being cut/not working out for us- i just hope it will be on positions we have covered.

We're really thin on bigman front so I hope Dedmon will be sucesfull.
Overall, while we stayed competative despite loosing Timmy I think this is transition season for Spurs which fills me with unease.
With Manu being on his last year and regressing Parker, we're bound to adress our guard rotation in upcoming offseason- And this is why i' not really excited about Gasol signing- it's just another roster spot that will need adressing in the near future.

Edit: Almost forgot- I'm really happy that we finnaly closed our charity program for medicore redhead players- bye Bonner

I'm in pretty much full agreement here. It could be a little messy at first. With Tim he might not have been able to make some plays athletically anymore but you could always count on him rotating and being where was supposed to be defensively. Now we have 2 guys who will need to get comfortable with that, however Dedmon should be able to compensate with his athleticism where Tim could not anymore. I think if you look at things honestly, Gasol was a much better offensive player than Timmy was last year and defensively I think they were about equal. The big thing will be how long it will take Gasol to get comfortable.

I'm pretty sure Lee wont be able to get away with a lack of effort defensively here. Pop will ensure at least an improvement in him defensively. I think he will fit in fine but the injuries worry me. I'm convinced that our success or lack of it this season will lie in the hands of Anderson and Simmons. If those guys become reliable contributors (20-25 solid minutes a night) we might have something here and it looks as though the franchise is going to give them every opportunity to do that this year. The X factor is Bertans. The one summer league game he played was very impressive. I have high hopes for him.
I do agree that Murray will take some time but he has shown he can play.

I don't like how thin we are up front actually. If LMA or Gasol go down for a significant amount of time we are in trouble. I'm also interested in how Kwahi is going to approach this year. If certain things don't go well for us, he might have to win some games by himself. I know he has the game to do it but does he have the desire to do that if necessary?

I think overall it's an improvement when you take into consideration the expected improvement of Leonard once again and also improvement and a general comfort level of Aldridge.

PG is the key for me. If Parker can stay relevant we'll do well.

Another big question mark is Danny Green. If he is inconsistent as hell, he should be moved. But what for?

I like Murray and think he has a bright future but you're right, it's not likely he plays important minutes right now. Which is why I wish we'd maybe done a Danny Green trade package for someone like Rubio or signed Lin etc.

Agreed. If even 1 of those 3 guys steps up and becomes a valuable rotation piece we'll be in good shape.

As for Kawhi I have no doubts about his desire, kid's a killer and he's going to be better this year.

Totally agree. Tony and Danny just make me nervous, we don't really need amazing seasons out of them but some consistency would really help.

And I also agree that we should of chased a guard with our cap space. I understand the Gasol signing but I just think we could of addressed our issues in the paint for cheap.
