Policy Update : Heads up!

Post#1 » by Blkbrd671 » Thu Sep 1, 2016 6:51 am

As always bwgood77 doing a amazing mod job and informing posters of a policy that most violate but don't realize it.

For those of you that still have access to other boards, this may help keep you on them longer. I can't emphasize enough how in tune bwgood77 is with most posters and how to properly communicate moderating. Its almost like he's a Detroit Mod. 8-)

I have realized over time on the forums, since being a moderator, that many don't understand the language filter rule. While this rule may not be enforced to a great degree on all forums, because this is the biggest forum with many visitors, contributors and viewers, it comprises people of all ages, and therefore, it is enforced to ensure we don't have inappropriate language in threads.

So to clarify, if you post a word that may be questionable and post three of the letters and an asterisk (and perhaps you think this is the best way to do it to make sure you don't type the word out), then that is evading it.

If you just simply type out exactly what you want to say, the filter will do it's job and block the word out for you and I'm sure many will get the idea of what you are trying to say. But of course do not direct such language as an attack on another poster or while debating someone, because that will not be tolerated.

That is not to say using this language is appropriate, but I wanted to clarify the rule because I wanted to make sure the solid contributors here don't get a warning by accident.

The rule is outlined in the thread titled "IMPORTANT: General Board Rules Reminder", but apparently not all take the time to read that, so if you haven't that would be a good idea to take a few minutes to do.

Thanks for reading and carry on.

Also this may not be a update to the policy but always been the policy, and now moderators are enforcing more heavily.

Or bwgood77 going for that mod of year award!!! lol

I'm sure this will draw some derision, but I don't worry about the language filter. I'm convinced no point or argument is improved by language that would draw its attention.

When Drummond gets his 5th block of the game I'm still gonna say, "Atta boy Dre, get that weak sh*t outta here!" in our game threads.

Maybe it says shot?

Am I supposed to get excited for yet another moderator taking his job too seriously and chomping at the bit to throw his weight around? Sounds like another Nazi mod in the making to me. The Pistons board is blessed with terrific moderators and the thing that makes them so great is that they let us do and say what we want without overly policing us and this leads to better conversations and yet still little to no issues with posters. There are far too many sh*t (yes, I did that on purpose) mods who like to throw their weight around and I have zero respect for them.

Like 13 year olds don't know and use the F-word?

Come on, now.

We can "keep it real" or we can posture. If anyone thinks that an internet forum is forwarding morality and/or the growth of the human condition, I've got news for you--you're either kidding yourself or need some justification for your existence.

If this were my website (and hence my livelihood), I'd be doing smart moves to increase participants. Some people (not me) are offended by certain words, and a filter seems like a good way to remove them. I totally get that.

I did learn something - I thought I was doing the right thing by doing sh*t like this, but I guess the preferred way to write **** is to just write the **** ****. I'll be using less asterisks from now on :-)

Actually its the exact opposite. Most mods would just start enforcing the policy and you get your notice via warning or suspension , because the assumption is that "posters are suppose to read the bulletins". Bwgood77 , at least in my experience, is furthest thing away from Nazi, and is active (AND I MEAN ACTIVE) on a lot of other boards trying to facilitate discussion. The quote i provided was a thread he started on the GB just to give everyone a fair headsup and clarify a rule.

Don't paint all non-Piston mods with the same brush. There are great, good, mediocre, and crappy ones.

Generalizations are bad, but Realgm has just turned into a wierd place with factions created by the administration, and the policies put in place. Every board has its own feel and own boundaries which makes it exceedingly difficult to participate in discussions with other boards.

Why?

Moderators from other boards use their "power" to bully outside posters into submission.

Then you have an absolute archaic view on swear words right out of the fifties. It's just a weird and bizzaro place to have a discussion about basketball so people's frustrations are taken out on the moderators lumping them into a large group.

One things for sure though, I'm am growing increasingly wary of even coming here any more. Combine the over moderation, divided factions, money grabbing ads that have absolutely ruined the user experience to the point where I would rather go anywhere else to talk basketball and the only thing keeping me from just saying **** it, are the other posters.

This whole site has become unadulterated garbage because of mainly the ads, and no talk of fixing it has happened at all. It's just absurd. Perhaps the admin should sell the site and let someone who will actually care about the users, and their experience.

Take your payday and run. The way it's going, in a few months I'll have to take a **** survey before I can post.

My frustration can't be singular.

Geez... All I can do is laugh. Really thinking about finding another place to talk Pistons. Just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

Just FWIW, I was having the same problems a few months ago with all the ads and even posted about it. Someone (I'm sorry, but I forget who) replied to try an Ad Blocker extension, which helped some. Then I simply disabled Flash in my browser and I haven't had a single problem ever since. Of course, I don't need Flash for other ****, so that was any easy solution for me.

And yes, per the theme of this thread I just typed **** in the last paragraph (and just now) just to see how the language filter would actually work! :D

FWIW, me too ... and I still needed to disable Flash. I used to use Safari and the ads on RealGM would crash my entire system (and I'm on a Mac, so that's actually pretty tough to do). On Chrome, the browser would just hang up until I got the "Unresponsive tab; do you want to kill?" message. Once I disabled Flash, I have had literally zero problems whatsoever.

i am not much of a computer guy and you very well may no a sh* ton more than me. But it maybe have to do with your OS if its older or another virus on your computer. I occasionally have lag problems(when f* toronto fans blow a load), but i never have ad pop ups or flash problems on a regular basis.

This is so far off **** topic that I felt the need to throw a couple of **** swears into this sentence for the filter to catch!

I'm not a full on tech-geek computer guy, but I am a Mac-head 'cuz I've worked in graphics most of my life. The problem seems to be between Mac's newest couple of OS's and Flash. I've researched this, and apparently any Flash component made in Adobe's newest software will have problems in Mac browsers. Naturally, Apple claims it's all Adobe's fault and they don't need to fix the OS while Adobe claims it's all Apple's fault and they don't need to fix their software, so the end users wind up getting screwed while the billion dollar companies are in a pissing contest. But thank you for trying to help!

Edited to add on topic — hey, whaddya know? "Pissing" is an approved word! :D

IMO: too much posting about Mods is gonna put your arse on the No Fly List so here's my advice (& it's not backseat moderating, cause that's against policy too):

IF you feel strongly about an issue I would PM the Detroit Mod of your choice and have that guy be your spokesman for whatever annoys you.

OR PM Howard Mass!

Constantly airing your dirty laundry in public is not the smartest move.
