Griffin has "bad" playoff series that are better than Millsap's best playoff performance as a Hawk. Compare Griffin vs Millsap in the post-season when Griffin isn't sitting out and there's really no argument for Millsap.yoyoboy wrote:Eh...I wouldn't put Griffin ahead of Millsap.
Griffin's 27 playoff games in 13-14 and 14-15 per 36:
23.1 pts / 9.5 rebs / 4.7 ast / 2.6 tov / 1.0 stl / 1.0 blk / 55.5 TS% / 113 Ortg
Millsap's 33 playoff games with Atlanta the past three seasons per 36:
16.4 pts / 9.3 rebs / 3.1 ast / 2.4 tov / 1.4 stl / 1.5 blk / 51.3 TS% / 103 Ortg
You can even look at Griffin in the stretches where Paul has been injured and consider both team success and his performance. Of course the argument and only argument would be that Millsap is a superior defender, but Griffin is not a bad defender and Griffin is a superior offensive player and much better as a primary option.
I'm not talking who I'd rather have in the playoffs. You were referring to regular season performance only, and even when Griffin is healthy, he hasn't been as good as Millsap there.
RPM, RAPM, WS/48, and BPM all give Millsap considerable edges over Griffin that can't be ignored. Griffin has a slight edge in PER, but PER is known to overrate volume scoring and not value defense as much as it should, which works heavily in Blake'a favor. And Millsap has those statistical edges largely because he's simply a much more impactful defender. I think you undervalue the disparity between the two on that end. Millsap was a legit top 5 defender last year. And he's been the first option and best player on 60-win and 48-win Hawks teams these past 2 years. Atlanta would fall apart without him. On the flip side, Blake is a clear step below Paul on the Clippers and they haven't missed as much of a beat in the RS as you'd expect without him on the floor. The Clippers won 53 games last season and were on pace for 51 with Griffin healthy. Just something to take into consideration.
I'd listen to an argument that Blake is the more talented player, but simply speaking on who's better...I immediately look to impact and actual production. And in that case, Millsap takes the cake for me no doubt. At least in the regular season.
That's fine, but I'll have to first challenge the "considerable edges". Of course these stats aren't meant to rank players or to specifically say that the player whose numbers are higher is better. They help to give some inferences and direction and suggest the level of their performance.
The only time Millsap has had a higher WS/48 than Griffin was last season.
15-16: Blake .156 | Millsap .183
14-15: Blake .183 | Millsap .166
13-14: Blake .205 | Millsap .129
12-13: Blake .196 | Millsap .154
Millsap's career high was .183 WS/48 last season which was Blake's number in 14-15 and actually from 11-12 to 14-15 it was Blake's lowest WS/48.
Next is BPM. Offensive BPM is more accurate then defensive BPM since defensive BPM is primarily derived from blocks, steals and rebounds, this is also the problem with individual Drtg which is basically team Drtg and a players numbers gets "lower / better" the more they defensive rebound, block and steal. So that's why it is no surprise that Millsap had his highest BPM last season when he had career highs in drebs, steals and blocks. Now, Millsap is a good defender, so we'll give him the credit he gets there from the lack of accuracy in the stat just to not belabour that whole issue. Again, last season was a bad season for Blake, that is obvious. 14-15: Blake 4.1, Millsap 4.4, barely any difference and you could attribute difference to error even. 13-14: Blake 4.6, Millsap 3.1. If you average Blake from 11-12 to 14-15, excluding his 15-16 injury season, he averages 4.4 BPM and Millsap in his three seasons in Atlanta averages 4.2 BPM, so there's certainly no great difference. If we isolate OBPM which at the least is the more accurate one, Blake is way ahead averaging 3.0 OBPM to Millsap's 1.1 OBPM in those same spans.
RPM from ESPN's numbers:
15-16: Blake 2.07 | Millsap 5.24
14-15: Blake 3.35 | Millsap 5.09
13-14: Blake 4.65 | Millsap 2.10
So sure, if we take 15-16 as the standard for Blake then he doesn't look as good, but that was his least productive season in quite some time due to playing injured before be went out for some time and then his 5 games after returning which were awful. Those 5 games alone dropped his ppg by 2, his TS% by 1 and Ortg by 1 from his first 30 games. So I don't know....

Warriors need to tighten up their defense big time
They are allowing 121.5 ppg in the first two games

Yeah, Davis and Kawhi might look like the 2 best players so far. But like in the past several seasons, Lebron will restore order in the middle season and in the playoffs... He's still the best player on the planet when it matters the most.
