Hypothetical - Re-draft the last few years (and un-do trades if you like)

Post#1 » by 1eyedjake » Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:25 am

Fun little hypothetical exercise.
Build your own Magic team from our draft positions the last 4-5 years and un-do trades that we may have done.
(Do not make trades. This is based purely on draft opportunities, and then whether to keep players we've had based on the different roster from those picks.)
This is meant to be some reflective fun, not a Hennigan bash.

I'll have a go 1st.
2013 - Giannis Antetkounpo
(disclaimer: I liked Oladipo at the time, wanted him, was happy we took him. Also, I'm aware that everyone missed on Giannis, not just us. But this is not about that.)
2014 - Dante Exum & Rodney Hood
(Again - I really like Gordon, have hoped for the best with Payton and liked what he's done at times. Also, I think Payton might be the better player right now, but again that's not what this is about.)
2015 - Devin Booker
(I'm not closed to the idea Mario could still end up being better, but it's not looking that way right now.)
2016 - Juan Hernangomez

Trades to nix: Tobias Harris to DET. Harkless for nothing (though I'm not sure I'd re-sign him at his current contract.)

Sign Biyombo & possibly Augustin (not sure the cap space would be the same...)

2016-17 roster
PG - Exum / Giannis / Augustin
SG - Fournier / Booker
SF - Hood / Harris / Booker
PF - Giannis / Harris / Harkless
C - Biyombo / Vucevic

Shooting, length... not sure it's a playoff team still but it would be damned fun, full of potential and wouldn't be far off.

Edited:

I mentioned this before in another thread.

2013 - either Giannis/CJ McCollum
2014 - pick any 2 - TJ Warren/Nurkic/Lavine/Clarkson
2015 - either Myles Turner/Booker
2016 - Sabonis

this could have been our lineup

CJ McCollum/CJ watson
Fournier/
TJ Warren/
Myles Turner/Terrence Jones/Sabonis
Vucevic/Nurkic/Zimmerman

with a top-11 protected 1st coming from Philly this year. Add in some FA signings, that is a promising team

How did we get Dipo, if you take CJ?

don't forget.... oladipo was in the 2013 draft. But yeah.... Giannis All day erryday in my book. I actually wanted to trade down with Atlanta for their 2 pick and get giannis and gorgui dieng... giannis would have been gone and Shroeder would have been the runner up.

I'll play along. I wouldn't undo any trades, just get a 1st back from Detroit in Harris trade.

2013: Giannis
2014: EP and Clarkson
2015: Turner
2016: Sabonis and Prince * from Detroit

FA signings: DJ and Sullinger.

EP/DJ
Fournier/Clarkson
Giannis/Prince
Sabonis/Sullinger
Turner/Vooch

2013: Giannis
2014: Lavine and Warren
2015: Turner
2016: Sabonis

For our PG I would have outbid Detroit for Reggie Jackson from OKC.

Jackson/DJ
Lavine/Fournier
Harris/Warren/Harkless
Giannis/Sabonis
Turner/Vuc

That's a deadly team.

This thread is a just a reminder that we don't even have a player that we can look forward to watch develop into a star night in and night out like Giannis, Embiid, Booker, Turner, CJ or TJ

Please try to hold back from gifting us any extra assets other than what we know we had or could have kept. (ie, we do not know we could have got a 1st, so leave the extra 1st out of the exercise.)
:)

It helps to keep us on topic - which is purely a draft re-do and trade nix. I think it keeps us more in line with what more easily could have been on the team, too.

Umm we definitely could have got a 1st back in the Harris trade. It's been discussed and I'm not the only one who believes we could/should have got a 1st back.

off the top of my head based off of the NOW...

2013: Giannis
2014: Gordon and Lavine -> possibly having traded up to get Embiid
2015: Myles Turner

This i like taking a test and knowing the answers already.... but if i was to make particular moves knowing what i know now...These are the selections I would have developed my Championship Magic Team with

No clue why we drafted a dinosaur 1980's style big out of St Bonaventure instead of the first team All American, DPOTY, national POTY out of Michigan State. :banghead:

I didnt include Draymond because no one saw him coming, hence him being in the 2nd round. I was trying to think of other players predicted to go top 15-20

i only say this because I was at Bama when Horry was there (my GF and his GF were roommates, real nice guy). Nothing like Draymond in college was Horry. Horry was a SF, deep range, good defender. Moved to PF when he slowed down some was a decent help defense shot blocker. Was not the passer that Draymond is, couldnt defend SF's once he moved to PF. I would say his game was more Ibaka than Draymond, except Horry was more craftier and actually had an inside game.

measurables man. We see it every year in the NFL draft, screw watching 3-4 years of tape, guy runs a fast 40, benches 225 30 times, draft him a la Tony Mandarich.

I liked him in that draft, liked him at Michigan St. I was shocked that he fell to round 2.
