Atlanta looks to halt skid in Phoenix

Atlanta began the trip with a win in Indiana but things have not gone well since they headed west.

They suffered their worst loss of the season in Utah which prompted a player’s only meeting and followed that up with a double-digit loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles.

Much of Atlanta’s problems can be traced to an inconsistent offense. They have an offensive rating of 92.6 over the past seven games. They still lead the league in defensive efficiency at 97.5 but have allowed 101.7 per 100 possessions over that stretch.

Paul Millsap has been listed as questionable on the Hawks injury report for Wednesday’s game at the Suns with a left hip injury.

The starting power forward participated in the team’s shootaround on Wednesday morning. No specifics were given on the extent of the injury. Millsap played 35 minutes in the Hawks 105-100 loss at the Warriors Monday. He finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

This is a big one, we have to start getting back on track before this hole we're digging becomes too deep.

Suns are coming off 3 days of rest, are playing at home and we might be fatigued from the fact that we're ending a road trip. Also our best player might be out... I don't care though, this needs to be a W.

Fightback in the 2nd quarter via some sloppy Suns turnovers (repaying us for all of our TOs no doubt), cuts the lead from 15 to 2.

The beginning of this 3rd quarter is so important. We can either take the initiative and go ahead or we can do what we've been doing on this skid and just dig ourselves a hole we can't get out of.

I really despise our defensive scheme. I get it, we're first in defensive efficiency but the amount of wide open 3 pointers we concede as a result of failed trapping is completely ridiculous.

Record: 10-9

Lost 7 of the last 8, finished the roadtrip 1-4. They just lost to a PHX team which had 5 wins coming in. They got swept by the Lakers. They got embarrassed by the Jazz.

A team which calls players only meeting and keeps talking about how they need to do better but end up embarrassing themselves and the fanbase night in and night out. I'm completely disgusted.

Laugh it off, get that slump out the way. Keep your head Hawks fans, breakthrough against a good Detroit team Friday.

Silver lining:

Schroder had his best game with a career-high 31 points and nine assists. He scored 14 fourth-quarter points as the Hawks rallied from a 10-point deficit. Schroder played a season-high 36 minutes, two more than the previous high he set the game before against the Warriors. Schroder also dished out nine assists and had a plus-minus rating of plus-15. He did have five turnovers, with only two in the second half.

Apparently, this was only the 6th time in the last 2 years a Hawk player has hit 30 points in a game.

I think, at this point, we should embrace our top 3 players taking the bulk of the offensive production. I don't think we get worse offensively if we embrace having a pair of 20 ppg scorers...instead of handful of 15 ppg guys.

Yeah, I never really understood all the hate that Dwight has gotten at his last two stops. I'm starting to get it now.

The antics on and off the court are...unpleasant.

Glad he's here. But I need him to grow up.

I dont mind him bringing the ball up in the position, but dont lead a fast break. he needs to get across the line and the PG/SG needs to come to him for the ball.

He throws it off the backboard then looks at Muscala like it was his fault LOL Like cmon Dwight the only person catching that 10ft missile you launched is Yao Ming.

DS makes no attempt to go get the ball, he just kind of jobs back. Dwight should NEVER lead a fast break, and he broke the cardinal sin of fast breaks, GET THE BALL TO THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR.

Korver doesnt even look at him, Baze is way up top on the corner, no DS , Dwight literally had 1 pass to Muscala and that was his only option, just a bad bad sequence

LOL.
That reminds me of Josh Smith - pass from half court that hit the back board, not once but twice in the same game
Get it together Dwight.

The inbound turnover was also bad - you gotta get ALL the way out of bounds Dwight.

Bingo.

I remember that game against the Lakers in LA very well for exactly those reasons.

Yeah, I've seen Shaq in his prime do a similar sequence multiple times. (Which was hilarious, BTW.)

But on the road, in a tight game in the midst of a losing streak and slumping offense...maybe exhibit a bit more offensive discipline.

NOTE: Josh Smith is a blockhead.

More silver linings:

It was a weird game for the Hawks to drop:

The Hawks shot 50% from the field, shot 36% from behind the arc, scored over 100 points, scored 21 second chance points, scored 20 fastbreak points, scored 29 points off of the Suns’ turnovers and had three players who scored 20 or more points… And still lost.
Here

That's two solid offensive performances in a row against adequate defensive teams.

DS seems to be the engine to make things go, and he looks much more confident/aggressive this week.

Not so rosy occurrence from last night:

Graham Chapple wrote:Yes, turnovers...the Hawks turned the ball over 20 times, leading to to 27 Phoenix points. You can point fingers at the tired defense, Mike Muscala’s tough game etc. but these 20 turnovers absolutely cost the Hawks this game. In a two point loss (which was really a five point loss since Baze swished a meaningless three at the buzzer) this was the difference. Dwight Howard led with six turnovers while Dennis Schröder added another five.

I'm not sure if you guys are reading the game recaps over at Hawkshoop, but this young man is one of the best out there.
