As great as Rose looks, he is still injury prone like crazy. Will he pull off a Grant Hill/Bernard King combo and return to be both an effective player and an all star caliber one after multiple injuries? Or will he pull a T-Mac, finding a way to have a few solid years while still being injury prone, allowing him to get a huge contract that by the end saw McGrady barely playing at all and then finishing with us in a mostly unimpressive brief tenure?
I would love if Rose and Jennings continue to play this well. But I am also aware both are in contract year deals, heading towards the primes of their careers, but also both recovering from serious injuries. They look great now, but will they hold up through the whole season, let alone multiple seasons? They are in their late 20's, and with the injury history it makes me very afraid we will make the mistake of locking both up to huge, long term deals only to see them deteriorate before our eyes.
With Melo's contract ending in 2.5 years, it wouldnt make sense to me to commit to anything longer than 2 year deals with Rose and Jennings, given their age and injury histories, but I think some team probably will, which will force our hands and give the front office the tough decision of blowing up our PG spot in the hopes of finding a duo better than Rose/Jennings. But at the same time, committing to that duo is very risky due to age and injuries. It could really work out, I absolutely love the Rose Jennings 1-2 punch and I hope it continues to give us wins.
this is a tough discussion. we also don't have a ton of options. if we take rose, we're agreeing to go to war with this group. if we let him go, there is not likely to be a viable replacement. we may end up taking steps backwards in terms of being competitive. talk about adding young players, ideally we would be adding cheap young talent to the group that knows how to war. i see that group form right now. when i think of the past few years, this is pretty much where i hoped for it to be taking form.
to the OP, i want to give rose his props. he is doing well for us. "systems of basketball" should make the definition of the positions less important. what's key is what we know rose to do, penetrate and make plays. i love that he is either eating the free candy in the paint or getting rid of it. that's what he needs to do. that pressure is a catalyst for the offense that opens things up for everyone else.
