I was pretty instantly enthralled, so I might not be the best sounding board but I loved that show.  If nothing else, Anthony Hopkins and every single dialog he has is awesome and meaningful, makes it worth watching alone.
 
Just was explaining to someone this very issue. The first episode is a drag, though isn't that the case with most new series attempting to find their footing?
But because of that lull, I delayed watching the rest of the series for an extended period. Then, a few weeks later, get to episode 2 and it only took three more days to finish. 
Also, don't forget Ed Harris' phenomenal performance. I often was hoping the show would just center around his character's story. That first encounter with Hopkins..
