Lopez justifiably gets criticized for his weaknesses in rebounding, but I think there is a tendency to just look at the boxscore, see a lot of offensive rebounds, and conclude it was primarily his fault.
In fact, I have heard two narratives: (1) That Lopez was mainly at fault for the Knicks performance on the boards; and (2) That Hernangomez destroyed him on the glass. Let's actually look at reality for a change:
1. The Knicks had 21 offensive rebounds last night, but 11 of them came with Lopez OFF the floor.
The fact that over half of the Knicks rebounds were allowed in the ~16 minutes Lopez wasn't in the game (33%), should tell you that the main culprit was our bench, most noticeably Hamilton and Booker.
2. Of the 10 offensive rebounds that came with Lopez on the floor:
a. 4 went to Porzingis; 2 went to Melo; 1 went to Noah; and 2 went to Hernangomez
b. Only on three occasions (out of 21 O-rebounds) did Lopez's primary assignment grab the rebound. This occurred on both of Melo's boards and (one of) Noah's.
c. On two other occasions, Lopez did not have the primary responsibility for the play, but should have done more to grab the rebound (Porz's first two rebounds).
---------
So as to (1) Lopez mainly being at fault, I'd say he had some degree of fault on 5 of the Knicks 21 offensive rebounds. He was definitely not our main culprit.
As to (2) Hernangomez destroying Lopez on the glass - this one makes me laugh the most.
Hernangomez had 7 offensive rebounds, but only 2 occurred with Lopez in the game, and they both happened on the same possession.
Lopez also wasn't at fault for those two rebounds. He contested a long-two on the wing and Lopez's teammates failed to box out Hernangomez on his two attempted put-backs.
Also, Hernangomez made a grand total of three shots while Lopez was in the game. One of these shots had nothing to do with Lopez who had switched onto Porzingis. So he gave up two baskets to the guy. Big deal.
Hernangomez didn't destroy Lopez on the glass. Not one of his offensive rebounds was Lopez's fault. Unless you want to blame Hamilton for giving up 5 O-boards while Lopez was on the bench...
