He looked slow and old to me...I jut chalked it up to rust and being out of shape. According to stevemcqueen, he was a lightning quick Ben Wallace out there. Interesting.
Well you can't compare him to Jason Smith. That's probably why you thought he was slow. I meant that he's fast for an Earthling big, not a Saiyan.
Mahinmi does foul a lot. He always has. I don't think it's from a lack of speed, I think it's because he's a handsy defender who keeps his hands dropped below his waist most of the time and contests shots hard. Guys try and shoot on him instead of passing out. The best way to keep his fouls down is for the perimeter players to prevent easy dribble penetration where the perimeter player is getting into the lane at full speed.
But on the flip side, it gets him a lot of sneaky pick and roll finishes because defenders will get lulled to sleep thinking he's not an active target.
That is also why Gortat will still play major role in the team, no matter if Mahinmi gets back to his old self. Mahinmi is a great guy for certain match-ups and he'll play whenever we need any space eater. It will be just a couple games a year though - you can already see what he will bring to the table and what Gortat brings.
I love the idea of Gortat/Morris/Mahinmi/Jason rotation, if all of them are healthy. It gives you flexibility and different styles, combo that is rare around the league. Problem is I don't know if Ian is able to maintain himself for longer stretches and minutes. If he can, and he is not fouling out within those ca 25 mpg, we can compete with every team in the league.
