Ok guys I'm talking about a deep, DEEP sleeper right now, but does anyone remember Dominic Artis from Oregon a couple seasons ago?
He's a bit small for today's PGs (just under 6'2), and not overly athletic, but my god does he have a good handle on the basketball.
He got kicked off the Oregon basketball team after being accused of participating in a rape of a girl, even though the accusation was never taken to court.
Oregon just distanced themselves from Artis under the sheer possibility that it could have happened.
So he goes to Junior College for a year, and then winds up at UTEP.
He is averaging
15.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 6.0 APG, 2.1 SPG
this year, on a pretty mediocre team (in a mediocre conference albeit)
I always liked how he controlled the game on the offensive end though. He always seemed like he was dictating how the game was playing out. And he can be a nuisance on defense too. Really gets his hands into passing lanes and has the footwork to stay with guys.
Maybe not the foot SPEED to recover on guys who drive past him, but I'm not saying this guy will be a star in the NBA.
One negative is he only is shooting .282 from 3 this year and .631 on FT. His career averages are a little better though (.317, .654)
He also has a tendency to take deep NBA 3s in college, even at Oregon he did this.
Idk, something about him when you watch him play you just feel like he is capable of doing more.
And idk what is going on in the dude's personal life but he seems like one of those guys who could really become a decent player if he put in the work and stopped relying on being that much better than everyone else in Conference USA.
Then again, I thought the Sixers should have taken Joe Young in the 2nd round of the 2015 draft so I might just be using my random Oregon basketball fandom to influence my analysis.
Still, I think Artis should at least get a shot on a summer league roster, and why not the Sixers?
