Who the hell was going to give us anything of valu for Calderon? You know the Bulls had to give us 2 2nd rounders just to get rid of him.

Calderón's contract was necessary for almost any trade proposal made for a star player for salary matching purposes. Waiving Calderon before the trade deadline would've been insane.

See above.

If we didn't want him why not buy him out in October? His contract was necessary to try and make bigger trades.

I don't see how this involves Magic at all. We got a 2nd-rounder to take the guy....how valuable can he be? Does Magic even know he's on the roster?? I know I constantly forget.

Personally I say screw waiving him, unless he takes a chunk off his contract (like 25%....as much as he's not playing for us). We don't owe him anything. No need to ruin the guy....but having him stick around the last 20 games is hardly draconian. If he REALLY wants out...then drop 20 games worth out of your contract. It's simple.

Either way, I don't really care. It's like $2mil, and we got our value out of the deal with the pick.

Maybe not directly but the entire impetus from his appointment was that things were f'ed up. He was here 3 days before the deadline so I'd think anything we did or didn't do in those 3 days is because of him.... right? Calderon was brought to the team to get picks primarily. If we wanted to cut him why not in October? Because we probably thought there was a chance that they could use his contract at the deadline. We couldn't and we're buying him out. It's how the game works these days.

As for Magic. He wanted this. Pushed for it and now it's his. If you're old enough to remember the last time he pushed to come back and save the day you'll know why I'm not completely raw-raw on his arrival. It could easily be one disfunction for another. I hope he steps back and lets the scouts and GM do their job but there again we have inexperience as well.

I get that you don't like this Magic thing. You have mentioned his failed attempt to "save the day" a good number of times now. I assume you're talking about his coaching stint? I do remember that. That was not good. I agree with that. Fair enough. There's no way it will be as bad as Jim. Jim's 4 seasons at the helm were 27, 21, 17, and whatever this ultimately pans out to be....like 22-23. Thats 87-88 wins. I will personally make a wager with you that by the end of the next 4 seasons (wont count these 20ish games)...we will have more than 88 wins. I'll bet you tickets in the lower bowl. Don't have to be court-side tickets....but decent lower bowl seats. 2 tickets. You in? Thats how sure I am that Magic won't do worse than Jim. Will Magic be great?? I dunno. He would not have been my personal pick either....but I think it's certainly worth a shot.

That said.....this Calderon thing is like losing a bic lighter. Your really wasting brain cells on this one? Jeez man...thats some serious nit-picking only 5 days into the guy's tenure.

The reasons he was here was to get a couple seconds and use some of our space. That was a good thing. The reasons he's being released is that we couldn't find a way to trade him with others to improve the team. That's a thing... not good but not horrible either. If we're keeping track of when the good and bad happens to show one FO is better than the other I say lets be clear about it.

Magic's coaching stint was very bad. His return to playing was just as bad for the young team. They had their own success and culture. He crushed it by the 10th game demanding more minutes in the 4th quarter over NVE. He demanded a coach be fired.... he demanded that Kareem be traded. I know the great Magic everyone sees on YouTube and in retrospectives but there was an equally damaging other side to him that gets little attention. Those of us who remember all of that have a good feel for what we are most likely going to see here. There is a reason Magic was pushed away from the Lakers by Dr. Buss in the late 90's.

All of that said. Will he be better than what we had? Who knows. I think we will see much less patience given to the kids. The fan base loves the potential of the younger players so I have a feeling we will see it tested soon if we don't make big strides. Magic has put himself in a position of savior and it's hard to keep saying wait 3 years like the previous group was.

The truth is that we have a team of largely inexperience players being led by a rookie coach and now being led by a Rookie GM with a Rookie President. That's a lot of inexperience and to just say it's going to be better than before is ignoring all of that I believe. I would have liked to see a strong veteran GM come in with Magic. Instead we get an agent. We'll see.

Just leave it at that, man. We had the cap-space...and we got a 2nd rounder to take him. You know what? That was Jim taking $$ he didn't have to spend, ultimately half (or whatever %) out of his pocket for the Laker future. Really good move on his part.

Whether or not we waive him has no impact on Magic as president.

Jordan was a giant pain in the arse, who didn't get along with hardly anyone, and had a huge ego. Kobe was a monster for a teammate. Essentially got Shaq and Phil ran out of town (Shaq played his part). All part of the package with these elite guys. I was there for all but the first couple years of Magic. Your leaving out a pretty large chunk of "the story". Between 79-91 season we won 5 titles. Lost 4...so we made the finals 9 years there.....I think 2 Western conf losses.

From start to finish.....we were in it every year under his tenure. 20-points / 11-assists. About 140 tripple-dubs in a 900 game career. That's about 1in 6 games. Guy has every damn right to be a beast. Far be it from me to say anything negative about the great Kareem, but the guy had what??....1 title in the 10 years before Magic....5 after?

Just sayin.

You wanna watch the dude like a hawk, you go right ahead. My wager still stands if you wanna take it. I have no doubt he'll be better than the guy before him. Up to you. But to have a go at him over a nothin Calderon move (or lack thereof) 3-4 days into his tenure is just hatin for hatin's sake.

The run from 79-91 was amazing no doubt however Magic wasn't the one who closed the big wins other than the one hook shot. Game 2 in Boston in 1984 is etched in my head forever. If you do truly remember that time then you'll remember how he deflected the criticism for dribbling the clock out.

Kareem was a moody eccentric intellectual who rarely if ever hung out with that team. He didn't care to be seen as the guy nor did he seek that attention. He just did his job. Showtime was 42 minutes of the games in the 80's. The rest was him typically closing the close games. Kareem at 38 was still our difference maker on most nights. That is a testament to his greatness. His legacy has endured without hardly any media hype. As a fan of the Lakers from the "pre-Kareem" days I've always held him up as the greatest player I've ever seen for a number of reasons. I've also had the opportunity to meet them both in my capacity in AAU/DC over the years. I can tell you that how I described their personalities above was just about exactly how they were in person. Magic was engaging and happy to be there. Kareem was there. Just how those 2 are.

Magic single handedly saved the NBA. Bird also gets credit but I don't think he would have if Magic hadn't been there. Those of us who went to games in the 70's will tell you that a division leader would have 5 or 6 thousand people in the stands and even then teams like Atlanta, WA and several others had to give tickets away to generate buzz. There was a bad rap on the pro game in those days because of the drug association as well. Magic was the smiling guy who said all the right things and was a top 3 or 4 player to boot. I don't discount him at all as a player. We wouldn't be discussing the merit of advanced stats without him on the floor in those years. Without him and David Stern the NBA might have died.

Change for changes sake isn't always better. I truly hope he does better and maybe the breaking up of this team of young guys will get us there faster. We will see. I'm not one to just "hope" on anything. Especially if there is context I'm aware of. Call it hate if you like.

Hey...Love me some Kareem. I'm just speaking to Magics ability to get results. 9 finals in 12 years really SAYS SOMETHING.

I agree with your concept....but this was hardly "change for changes sake" ....this team has been spiraling down the crapper since Jim took over. Almost nothing has gone right. We're only gonna make a slight gain this year, because last year was the worst season in our long history. If this season had happened 3-4 years ago, THIS would be the worst team in Lakers history. I mean ENOUGH! Jim sucked at running the team. Sorry!! It is what it is! I don't hate Jim.....I hate what the Lakers became under him. I think Mitch and Jim have both handled this with class.....and I would have liked nothing more than Jerry's son to take over and continue the domination. There's absolutely NOTHING personal here with Jim. But the team was complete BALLS under him. That's just fact. We were total arse! So this is not 'change for change sake' .....this is S.O.S!!!

Be pessimistic and guarded. That's totally fine. But let's give the guy a year or two to get his 'vision' going before we start nit-picking seriously small minutia. If he does something really awful....go at it! I prob will too! But Calderon??

The Lakers waved Calderon.

Yup...sounds like it. Good luck to him.
