How will the Starting Rotation do?

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Mon Apr 2, 2007 2:57 am

How do you think the starting rotation will do this season?

1) Roy Halladay
2) AJ Burnett
3) Gus Chacin
4) Tomo Ohka
5) Josh Towers

The short answer - not good enough. One injury to AJ or Doc and we are in serious serious trouble. We have enough depth for the 4/5 spots, the problem is Chacin is also a 4th starter himself forced into 3rd.

That pretty much sums it up. We have enough interchangeable parts to make up for injuries to #3-5; if Roy or AJ get injured, however, we're royally screwed.

I'm not thrilled with our 3-5 starters. I think Doc can have a Cy Young type season though. I also really expect AJ to continue his good play from the end of last season.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Ohka become the #3 and Chacin drop to our 4th best starter. Although Im worried about the bottom 3. And very worried about any injury to the big 2

I don't think they'll be that bad....they'll keep us afloat for awhile....then JP will pull a shocker and move a guy for a #3 pitcher.....possibly Brandon League...you never know!

Everyone not named doc or AJ is garbage. Im not so optimistic this year about the pitching. Especially if AJ goes on his usual injury watch or Doc breaks his leg again.

Both the AJ and Halladay are both gona be on the DL once again this year. plus Josh Towers isnt even worth a number 5 spot. Gustavo has to have a phenomenal year and actually break out for the jays to have a chance to over ride the yanks and sox.

The key to a manageable bull pen this season will be to avoid injury. Assuming no major set backs, I expect 20+ wins from Doc, 15 from AJ and hopefully 10+ from each of the last 3. It gets really thin after our big 2 and so a lot of The Jays success will rest on the shoulders of Chacin, who's really more comfortable 4th in the rotation.

Key word is health

I think the potential is there for them to be phenominal if everything falls into place...and we are due one good helth season

Its not the best but I think it cant get worse than it was last year but the only thing is we had Ted Lilly. I think Chacin will suck though, he looked shakey in some starts but I hope is will do good.

Our rotation sucks, let's face it. Chacin has seriously fallen from grace, is supposedly on a very tight leash, close to being bumped from the rotation (and he's our #3!). Ohka looked solid in spring, but the best we can really hope from out of him is .500 ball. Towers is awful, but he has the potential to be a very solid #5, if not, Zambrano can come in and likely give us the same 7 - 12 record or whatever.

however, if you look around the league, everyone's rotation is crap, full of make-shift starters, many converted relievers, etc. I realized this last night, when the Cardinals, the WS champions, only had one returning starting pitcher from last year in their rotation. They have two converted relievers (maybe a converted closer) and some serious question marks - i'm more comfortable with Ohka, Zambrano, Jannsen/Marcum tan with many of the unknowns STL has pitching for them

Personally I hope 4 out of 5 do well and make room for McGowan or another young prospect.... we need to start grooming some of our young pitching prospects

To answer your question though I think this rotation will be/look as good as our offense makes it look.... as much as critics will point out ERA, low K/9, high WHIP none of those stats really matter if the offense can carry us... and seeing as how this teams strength is clearly in its Bat .... the rotations success really depends on how the offense is doing

McGowan needs to earn his way there. Marcum and Janssen both proved last year to be better than him.

I believe the the jays number 1 and 2 starters will both post at least 10 to 15 if healthy. Halladay has a chance to become the Cy Young he once was in 2003 and if AJ can stay healthy, you will see him get at least 150 innings and close to 200 K's. It's really gona depend on if Chachin can give you good quality outings as well. The offense will have a big part and will pound teams with all their home run power if healthy. The Big Hurt is gona give a lot of protection in the line up.
