I'm still not convinced it definitely gets matched.
ESPN ran an article about how Porter's play in the playoffs would determine if he was worth a max deal.
The Wizards have no bench and would have to give up all possible cap space if they sign Porter to a max. I'm not sure that they will want to do that.
I've never wanted to throw a max at him because I don't think he's worth it and I don't want his contract to limit our cap flexibility when we actually have our picks back and (hopefully) should be a much better team. That's when we can start signing legit allstars to that type of big contracts. Not for a 3rd option who has struggled ever since Bogs showed up and doesn't look anything close to a guy who should be taking up more than 1/5 of your cap space.
same here. i dont care how young they are, i think its always a mistake to max a role player hoping he will eventually become an all-star. only time id do that is if its my own guy and im already over the cap (kind of like washington, which is why they would likely match)
I agree but I would say that if I have strong confidence that a player will become an allstar, I'd do it.
Bradley Beal wasn't an allstar last year but everything I saw from him suggested that he was going to keep improving, which is why I didn't have an issue throwing near-max/max money at him last year. I anticipated that he would keep improving and he has done so as a legit 2nd option for the Wizards.
The thing that separates Porter from Beal is that I don't have much confidence that Porter will become an allstar.
He is a decent defender and a good shooter, but these are attributes that we can get from other players for a much cheaper rate. If he had the ability to break down a defense or up his defensive intensity, he'd be a completely different player and have a much greater impact. If he had those capabilities, it would be a no-brainer to throw a max at him but he doesn't.
I've seen way too many players over the years perform at a good level for a 1-2 seasons, then change teams and are pretty bad because they no longer have the same support structure which allowed them to thrive as before.
The fact that Porter tanked after Bogs' arrival should've cemented in everyone's eyes that he's a player who shouldn't be maxed.
