first let me be clear on something I am not the biggest Bledsoe fan because I feel he doesnt create for his teammate enough but at least you need to get fair value for him. I think this year we were somewhere around 10 million or so below the salary cap threshold we dont have to move him and with an age of 27 he is just entering his prime. Also he is a positive person to have around the team in a leadership role so lets not act like he is one of the Morri brothers. last year we got a lottery draft pick (13rd) for Markieff Morris who isnt even one of the top 30 power forwards what do you call a player that is maybe in the top 15 PGs.
There is a little more context to that. First and foremost, the locked in super value contract Kieff was in $8 million for 3 more years.
Bledsoe is a better player than Kieff, but he makes a lot more, has more injury risk, and fewer years left on current contract...AND most importantly, PG is a much more abundant position of talent in the league and their is less need.
By RPM this year, Markieff ranked 13th among PFs http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/RPM/position/6
Bledsoe ranked 15th among PGs http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/RPM/position/1
I mean, even there you can see Markieff actually had a higher RPM flat out. 1.86 vs 1.69.
Despite the more expensive and shorter contract, the older player, who is more injury prone, and the league more abundant in point guards, Bledsoe SHOULD command more.
A couple of other factors though are that with the suddenly inflated contracts, draft picks are more highly valued and worth more these days, and last year's draft wasn't nearly as highly valued as this year's draft, so even the little lower pick this year is probably a better return than the 13th pick last year. They also probably felt the pick wouldn't be as high when they traded for him either as they had hoped to make the playoffs.
I think Bledsoe is probably worth the 12th pick in this draft.
I'm not necessarily advocating trading him either, even for the 12th pick. There are probably good arguments for and against trading him even for something like the 12th pick.
