I agree that the return isn't the best but I think at this point with Carmelo, there's not much better to be had and getting a 27 year old point guard on a cheap deal and a future 1st round pick with 2 expiring deals isn't so bad when compared to other options that have been tossed around, such as Austin Rivers/Jamal Crawford/Wesley Johnson or just straight up buying him out.
Yeah but we could probably get Rubio for Lee straight up and I'm pretty sure Phil wouldnt do it.
I get that but this isn't just a deal centered around us getting Rubio. It also has to do with getting cap relief and though it may not seem like it now, an extra first round pick is always an asset, whether it's this year or in 2020 and if it's one of the last picks in the 1st round as well, so be it. And, as for wanting more players like Lee, wouldn't we all but right now, a guy like Courtney Lee isn't doing much for this team. We're trying to start over. A guy like Courtney Lee is most valuable on a playoff team or a team who feels they're on the cusp of being one, hence Minnesota with their young nucleus and head coach who can take a guy like Lee and value him that much more. Courtney Lee on this team is just floundering. Same goes for guys like Lance Thomas and Kyle O'Quinn. What they offer would mean so much more to a team in actual contention or a team on the cusp. Kyle O'Quinn's 15 minutes off the bench with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks mean nothing when we're losing home games to the Magic but numbers like for a team in the playoffs could be huge. These are the guys we need to be shopping. We have KP. We have Billy. We have the 8th pick. Go forward from there with that. Everyone else should be able to be had.
You just said that guys like Lee are floundering on this team because we're not a contender, but then why do we need the cap relief? You're basically gifting Lee and Melo away for Rubio and a 2020 Cavs 1st rounder. Lebron will probably still be a Cav by that time which means thats a late 1st rounder. A late 1st rounder 3 years down the road is not very valuable, and tbh neither is Rubio. Rubio has been on the market for a while and reports are we want even trade Lee for him straight up
Melo might have had his value diminished but not to that point. Lee and KOQ are quite valuable actually considering they are very solid players on reasonable contracts. Lee and KOQ were 2 great signings because they've outplayed their salary. Watch a guy like JJ Redick make bank, while Lee at 11-12 mil will be considered a bargain
