Danny has known he would be getting a top 4 pick basically all year long. He also knew that there was a 75% chance we don't get the #1 pick. As such, his main planning HAD to revolve around ending up with a non-#1 pick. They clearly have run a number of scenarios and found some that they like that did not involve winning the #1 pick. This is very relevant due to the salary slots of the draft picks and the impact the difference between #1 and #3 has on our salary situation. Every dollar counts when a guy like Zarren is involved.
When they won the #1 pick, Danny was able to choose his favored path/s mentioned above, while cashing in for yet another high pick that is all but guaranteed to be an impact type selection.
I wish Danny had gotten another asset in this trade, but I can see why he made it.
