JET was a top 10 pick, do you consider him a bust?
More not worthy of being top 10 than being a bust. he was a fine player, but I don't think at any point I'd label him a top 8 SG, which is what i would want form the 9th pick. someoen who is roughly top 8 in their own position.
With all due respect, I think you might be overemphasizing the 9th pick. While lottery it might be, you are hoping to land a really good starter for years to come. You don't typically get franchise players at 9. It sounds like that is what you are expecting. I could be wrong...
To be fair, there have been good talent available in the middle of the lottery. 7 of the 15 players were All-Star caliber players. It goes to show that it's very easy to sit here and judge talent, but it's still easy to make mistakes. All 7 of the All-Stars players would go much higher in a re-draft.
2016 - Jakob Poeltl, Utah
2015 - Frank Kaminsky, Wisconsin
2014 - Noah Vonleh, Indiana
2013 - Trey Burke, Michigan
2012 - Andre Drummond, Connecticut
2011 - Kemba Walker, UConn
2010 - Gordon Hayward, Butler
2009 - DeMar DeRozan, USC
2008 - D.J. Augustin, Texas
2007 -Joakim Noah, Florida
2006 - Patrick O'Bryant, Bradley
2005 - Ike Diogu, Arizona State
2004 - Andre Iguodala, Arizona
2003 - Michael Sweetney, Georgetown
2002 - Amare Stoudemire, Cypress Creek HS
As I go through this old draft, just to name some lottery players that Monk could be:
Ben Gordan
Devin Harris
Eric Gordon
Austin Rivers
CJ McCollum
Marcus Smart
Sure we want a starter type player, but so DOES EVERYONE. We are not special in that sense. Just because we have little young talent or that we want to win next year doesn't make it any less that other teams are also not wanting to settle for a bench player. We must remember that.
Ultimately, we are going to get a very good player in this draft and we should be excited. For what it's worth, my final preference is below:
(Fultz, Ball, Jackson, Fox, Tatum & Issac all gone).
1. Frank Ntilikinak
2. Dennis Smith Jr.
3. Malik Monk
4. Donovan Mitchell
5. Zach Collins
6. Lauri Markkanen
