He'll have something like $110k for the year.
Although, I guess if you think about it, even that's a pretty outrageous salary for a normal 19/20 year old. Still, this guy will not be living large. By NBA standards, that's hand-to-mouth. Barely more than a D-league salary.
There's a couple of things to add. He can pay the buyout in installments (that's the negotiation). The Sixers can only advertise they paid $650k. FIBA has no way or desire to verify were the money comes from. I also strongly believe that if a player is ready to come to the NBA he should do so ASAP. No better place to learn how to play in the NBA then on an NBA roster. I also believe this is the perfect time for him to come over. He can start to carve out a role with the team as they grow. Verse trying to insert himself after they are contending, which I happen to believe is closer then most others believe.
There's no way that the Sixers somehow secretly pay more money into this deal because the penalties for trying to circumvent the CBA aren't worth it. I believe that they negotiated the payment in installments for Korkmaz so that he has more money year to year, but the total effect on his payday is still a fact.
I don't have a problem with him coming over, just surprised that he would do it because financially it just didn't look like it was in his interests.
Maybe he is betting on himself. If he comes over and performs well, he will eventually benefit the most. Reminds me of Thon Maker's situation, Thon seemed too young and skinny, but he seems to be adapting great. Hopefully, Furkan can have the same results or better.
