No they're not obligated but if he is not going anywhere then he needs to be presented with a compromise scenario where he remains a Knick in some capacity. If they don't pitch anything then it is sure to create an ugly situation with more rancor than anybody needs. If Melo doesn't see it that way then that's on him-- the Knicks would be the adult in the room having pitched him with a very reasonable scenario. Melo's brand would be hurt in the end, something his agent would counsel him on.
The team has stated publicly they want to go young and spend their entire wad on a young player. The team is currently capped out with quite a few younger players on it.
I really don't think they have to explain anything to Carmelo, action speaks louder than anything.
If Melo is here he needs to be explained why he has to be a 6th man and not be blindsided, which will only create rancor and a toxic situation that benefits nobody. I'm sure I am not the only one who sees it this way and if it's thinkable it's actionable. The only obstacle would be Melo himself, and if he sulks or pouts etc. it's a very bad look. When you have no leverage you have to find a way to compromise.
I disagree and think if Melo ends up back with the Knicks next year it would be time for both sides to act like adults and do their jobs. Melo goes straight back to being our starter at SF or PF and the FO do their jobs and we play basketball and hope something comes up for a good trade for both sides around the trade deadline. We don't put him on the bench and we don't make Carmelo Anthony our 6th man. All this talk from some of you saying we should bench him if he's back with us is ridiculous.
ACT LIKE ADULTS!!!!!!!!!
