King could have had a roster with Harden, Batum and Millsap, or any other combo of realistic gets had he just had a normal brain.
And who knows if DLo or LeVert, or RHJ or Allen, or any of these young guys ever become just once in awhile All Star snubs, let alone a player of Kyrie's level.
I'm not saying to trade everything for him, but if it simply cost DLo, RHJ and a pick or 2, it's a complete no brainer. It's not giving up the farm to get him, when our farm is a petting zoo.
Are you kidding? We did all that and we STILL almost lost DWill to Dallas. Billy is stupid, but he HAD to make those trades with Portland and Atlanta.
King couldn't have gotten Harden. DWill would've walked before we had the opportunity to trade for Harden. He didn't hit the trade block until September. We needed to trade for joe Johnson in July.
Every stupid move we made before the Celtics trade was 100% made with the intention of pleasing, and keeping DWill FA.
And we still almost lost him to Dallas. How can you say we didnt have to make those moves?
None of those specific trades had to be made. He had a cache of assets like no other. Moves had to be made, but not those moves. He gave up a treasure chest of A+++ assets to bring in a bucket of grade D garbage and expired milk.
No one is saying they were good moves. But yes he did have to make those moves. I even remember hearing DWill himself requested we trade our pick for Wallace. Joe Johnson was an all-star SG. In all fairness, JJ was a good player we just over paid to acquire him. But JJ was the most attractive option. Harden wasn't yet available.
Billy King is an idiot but he had to make those moves to keep Deron. Stupid moves stemming from stupid moves.
And it is absolutely without a doubt the timeline we would go down again if we handcuffed ourselves to a superstar in a contract situation like Kyrie. Its a timeline any team goes down when they prematurely trade for a superstar.
Its all about # of years of team control
DLo has 7 years. LeVert has 8.
This isn't rocket science.
