Because prospects are more likely to bust than reach their potential. One player right now is "potential," the other has proven what he can do on the court and has off-court advantages as well. It wouldn't have been a lock, but I could see New York being torn between potential + rookie contract + locked up for 8 years versus proven star + marketability.
Go look up the % of top 10 picks that become all-stars, let alone multi-year all-stars and all-nba. That ****'s depressing.
