If the goal was to give the keys of the franchise to Zo then they had to get Dlo out of there. Dlo is a unique combination of immaturity and entitlement. He was cocky to the point where he thought he was already a star even though his play didn't bare that out. It's been a knock on him since high school. Additionally, he would do childish things in the locker room. Dlo wouldnt have let Lonzo lead the team nor would he have been mature enough to follow and be led by his new pg.
With that said, it would have been terrible on the court. Dlo is an inconsistent unathletic volume scorer. Sure he will drop 30 one game but he would then follow it up with three 9 pt games. The Majority of his shots comes from either wide open threes or pick and roll mid range shots. Without pick n rolls he can't create any space for himself. He also plays the game one notch slower than everyone else which is completely opposite of the pace Lonzo wants to play at. On top of that, defensively they would be a nightmare back court. Dlo doesn't have the foot speed to pick up small pgs nor does he have the athleticism to contest standard 2s. Trading Dlo to usher in the Zo era was a required move.
On the nets Dlo has a chance to shoot 30 attempts per game without the attention/pressure that comes with the lakers. Especially with Lin going down, Dlo will now have the green light like he's never had before but he will forever be an "empty stats" player. He will have nights where he will drop 30 but I guarantee you it won't end in a win. His style of play doesn't positively impact teams the same way Zo does. Dlo is like the pg equivalent to Melo or ZBo (20 n 10) but much more inconsistent.
