The whole "they have nothing to offer in return" sort of sucks though
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydhmqak3Send a top 5 or 8 protected 2018 1st rounder and that trade would make sense for both parties.
Lee and KOQ
for
Asik, Ajinca, Jackson, and 2018 (lightly protected 1st).
jackson is a decent piece and the 1st is a really nice asset.
Asik only has 3 million guaranteed in his 3rd year (when we really should be looking for cap space). Ajinca is only a 2 year deal. Also Asik might be able to get medical retirement which means his cap comes off the book right away.
So I think this makes sense. Pelicans at best will be a 7 or 8 seed. Might even be late lottery. Which means we could have a top 5 pick (potentially another top 14 pick) then maybe the 1st or 2nd pick in the 2nd round. It also frees up minutes for WHG and Dotson which is perfect.
Not a bad deal at all, other than the Knicks would wind up with Noah and Asik and like 30 million dollars of worthless Centers. Knicks don't get lucky and get medical exceptions and retirements and things like that. Then again, There is still Kanter and WHG as actual healthy C's and Noah, if ever healthy, is that 3rd C that teams generally carry (just not at 17 million per, thanks Phil)
We have too many centers as is. Asik just goes to the 15 man on the roster especially with Noah coming back we need to trade a center. Don't look at asik or ajinca as a centers because all they are going to do is ride the bench. Look at them as roster spaces.
we don't need cap space for next year because we will be coming off a 20 win year and no free agents want to come here. And I have also been reading the knicks might be able to apply for medical retirement if Asik misses all of this year which is likely.
The point is were would be maximizing getting a high lottery type 1st for KOQ and Lee which is really good value and take a flyer on jackson who was the 1st pick in the second round.
Would we need to make an additional move like maybe sending ajinca to a 3rd team for a similar horrible player with a similar contract sure. But im sure we could do that.
The key right now is getting back into the middle of the 1st round of the draft which this does and we are trading no key pieces to do this.
This also frees up major time for WHG and Dotson because Lee and KOQ are playing are rotational players right now. This would be a really forward thinking smart move. And pelicans need to make a move badly and shed a bad contract in asik by doing it.
