Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I dont think my expectations of Monk are unrealistic. The sky is the limit for this kid, right now i fully expect him to just give us flashes of his awesomeness but down the road he is going to be one of the best players in this league.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I'm still happy with the Monk pick, wouldn't take anyone picked after him just yet. It's still early, of course, but Monk's strength (outside shooting) has been a huge need for us year after year.
If he pans out then we can trot out two flame-throwers at guard and we'll be Blazers East, except we'd probably play better defense.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
As much as I like Monk, I think it's time for Clifford to limit his minutes with the return of Batum. It pains me to say that Monk has been hurting the team
Amid the few bright sparks he's made in sporadic moments with his scoring ability he's actually been a heavily net-negative player for the team. Until Monk shows some consistency in the form of efficiency and improve his shot selection he should be limited to maybe 10-15 minutes per game

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Yea the on/off court ratings so far this season do Monk no favors. I still think the smart move will be to stagger Batum into the 2nd unit as the de facto PG to get Monk playing off the ball. I know some people are excited about what MCW may bring but he’s ultra trash that’ll only make our bench that much worse. We just need to shorten the rotation to 8-9 players barring a back-to-back and injuries.

Completely agree.

no doubt Monk has a sweet stroke that will lead to purple patch games, but at age 19 he may be several seasons away from consistency; agreed no playoff level team in the NBA ought to rely on such a callow player to be one of their high usage scorers

I agree with MKIA. Will be interesting to see what our rotation looks like in March and how many minutes Monk gets.

I won't shed a tear if Monk is dropped from the rotation all-together until he gets his **** together. He's been awful outside of about 3 quarters.

I think most hot/cold players like him should be given about 4-5 minutes fairly early on in each half and fire a few shots off just to test whether he's hot or not. I'd be pretty disappointed if he fell out of the rotation but I think he should have a shorter leash. When he's cold, he shouldn't be given the minutes to go 1-10. This is how I felt about Marco, Troy, Tolliver etc

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
He's going to look a lot better with the ball out of his hands, imo. Right now it seems like as a backup PG he enters a lot of possessions already having decided whether to pass or shoot before even probing the defense. It's not uncommon to see him pass up a wide-open look just to force a pass one possession, only to jack up a shot with a hand in his face early in the shot clock shortly thereafter.
He needs to be a complementary player until he learns how to read NBA defenses, he will be much more effective as a role player whose decision to pass/shoot is already clear by the time he gets the ball. More open looks will also only help his shooting in general, as buckets seem to snowball for that sort of player.
I'm relatively happy with the flashes Monk has shown considering he's still a teenager, I really like how his confidence has not wavered, but he has also proven he's not yet ready to be a decision-maker. If we let him be a role player for a bit it's going to make him better down the road, jumping between backup PG and SG was a lot to ask right away.

This is why I wanted to see him in the starting lineup. Dwight could have helped offset all the mistakes he makes defensively. Additionally, kemba takes away all the ballhandling responsibilities so he can just worry about spotting up and maybe some secondary playmaking. The problem is that gives no one for kemba to hide on defensively, im sure thats clifford's resistance to the idea. And with batum, mcw, and stone all out backup PG was a legitimate concern. I don't know why we targeted such an obvious injury prone backup PG when it was such a position of concern.
I think Lamb would have handled the primary playmaking role on the 2nd unit just fine though

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I'm fine with benching Monk for the Clips game, but I hope it doesn't become a new trend.
The kid struggled mightily as a backup PG, but he was never (or at least I never read anyone who claimed it) was meant to be a PG, he's an undersized SG, and I'd like to see him get some steady minutes at that position off the bench.
For better or worse, Monk is one of the few guys on our roster with potential for dramatic improvement over the next few years. We need to make it a priority to feed him 5-10 minutes a night at minimum at his "real" NBA position and see how he progresses through the year.

I think his future is at the PG position, though. We will see.
