Hawks rookie Collins out 2-3 weeks with shoulder injury

Hawks rookie John Collins will miss two to three weeks with a sprained left shoulder, according to a report by The Vertical.

Collins suffered the injury near the end of the Hawks’ loss to the Cavaliers on Thursday night. An MRI performed Friday morning confirmed the sprain.

The Hawks selected Collins, 20, with the No. 19 overall pick the 2017 draft out of Wake Forest. In 21 games Collins has averaged 11.5 points and 7.1 rebounds while shooting 59.2 percent from the field.

Collins has played primarily at center. He’d started the past three games because of injuries to Luke Babbitt and Dewayne Dedmon.

Any ideas on who gets the lion share of the minutes with Dedmon and Collins out?

What options do we have in free agency or the minor league?

Can Mason Plumlee provide any production at this point?

Should we embrace the small ball approach even further?

What is Elton Brand doing right now?

Collins suffered the injury during the Hawks’ 121-114 home loss to Cleveland on Thursday night and underwent an MRI on Friday that revealed no tear, league sources said.

Collins is a core part of the Hawks’ rebuilding process and has had an impressive start to his career, averaging 11.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and nearly one block in 21 games. He was the 19th overall selection by Atlanta in the NBA draft.

The Hawks are also without starting center Dewayne Dedmon for the next three to six weeks because of a stress reaction in his left tibia.

An injury plagued season so far. It's easier to name the guys that haven't had any injuries:
Baze, Prince, Dorsey and Brussinno.

Every other player has missed time due to injury, that's just incredible.

Erie and Atlanta may as well swap jerseys and no one would know, hell.

Maybe I shouldn't be divulging this information before it's official, but Travis Schlenk just personally called me and asked me to play center for the next few weeks. They'll be paying me in popcorn and energy drinks.

Looked like Kial Korver's dirty bball-playing self jerked on Collins' arm yanking his shoulder outta whack. Poor bitter Kial, getting traded away and now trying to sabotage his old team (which was already sabotaging itself..., so maybe he was actually trying to help in the big picture sense?...) never saw Kial as a dirty playa, and was prolly just an accident, but when I first saw that I was all like "Dayum, Kyle pulling out all the stops to put the Hawgs in their place!!"

Budenholzer: John Collins can gain while out with injury

Losing John Collins for two to three weeks isn’t good for the Hawks, but coach Mike Budenholzer said a few games as a spectator may not be the worst thing for his impressive rookie forward. Collins can work on building his strength and gaining a better understanding of the professional game.

“Injuries are unfortunate, but you get to sit and watch and see things teammates are doing well,” Budenholzer said.

“He has an athleticism and a quickness,” Budenholzer said before the Hawks played the Nets on Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “We’ve been pushing him hard to use that same athleticism and that same pop to have an impact on the game defensively. He certainly still has a long ways to go, but when you go from summer league and training camp to some of the things he’s doing, it’s a pretty significant and noticeable improvement.”

A little clarity on the timing/decision of Brussino being waived:

Cavanaugh looks like the real deal. Not only can he shoot but he's played pretty tough inside fighting for rebounds. Brussino looked like he was 2 years in Hawks U away from being an nba player. That's a big investment.

I think Bud is honestly shocked at having a stretch 4 that can actually put a body on opposing bigs and his biggest criticism on Bruno was his strength. Good luck to Brussino but it's nice that the team is being treated like an open tryout instead of just sticking with guys being all hopeful and junks *cough* Delaney *cough*.

Yes. And I wonder if Delaney hitting the pine is a combo of Taylor's superior play along with Travis telling him that no way is he bringing Malcolm back next year. Just spek-u-laytin.

Absolutely Taylor has outplayed MalcDaddy but at the same time I have to imagine that Schlenk wouldn't be made at Delaney continuing to play big minutes. That's a guaranteed bottom 3 finish in the standings.
