Until the Finn sacrifice scene that was very true. Finn and Rose didn't really have a role in the film until that point. DJ was absolutely unnecessary. But that was like a backdoor pilot. It wasn't aboit serving this film but setting up what I assume will be Johnson's exploration of the universe.
It was interesting because we never really know what tje galaxy is like day-to-day. I mean we are told the Empire is evil but we never really see it except for police action against a rebellion.
But at least they got to show us a more varihued star wars.
