That said, you might take a look at Tony Snell's numbers last year: it was a breakout year for him. Watching him at the beginning of his career, I thought he had no chance; but in fact he's become a good player.
But even so, "we coulda done worse" is not a way to build a team. If you don't get early-career bargains like McCaw it is very difficult to become really good (unless of course, LeBron or someone like him decides he wants to play on your team).
To take another example, I imagine you may remember my jumping up and down about the undrafted Alan Williams 2 years ago. He has become a terrific player, as I thought he might; just signed for 3 years/$17m with the Suns. They got a tremendous bargain.
I'm not denigrating Jodie Meeks: not only "we coulda done worse" but we have done worse -- way worse! -- many times!
I'm guessing Snell and Delavadova (Snelly and Delly) was the least productive backcourt in the NBA. Now, they're getting paid a combined 20 plus mil per year.
Dellavedova was horrible. But Snell wasn't bad at all. Are you sure you've actually looked at his numbers? He shot over 40% on 3s, had a 60.1% TS%, basically never turns it over, doesn't foul much. Give the guy a little credit for pulling his game together!
That is a lot of $$ for the pair of them though! Then again, their real PG was the roY R2 pick Malcolm Brogden -- he's under contract for the next 3 years for a total of $4.8m. A little better deal, that!
Loved Tony Snell. Not only is he a good shooter and non-turnover prone (*cough Bojan), he can really defend the opponent's best guard.
