I don't read people saying "OMG I MUST HAVE BAGLEY". It's all about Young, and he is projected 5-7 right now.
Yes, I would prefer to have a higher pick, and I do support the tank. But to say it is a disaster is super dramatic and false. This is not a case where the Magic miss out on some stud like Porzingis because they picked 4th. This is more of a case where the guy everyone wants would be a bad pick at #1. And maybe the best guy in this draft goes bottom half of the lotto. Call me crazy, but outside of Tatum, I don't see any of the top lotto picks from last year blowing it up - and a lot of that has to do with going to a team ready to head to the Finals (Courtney Lee, anyone?).
The best player so far in last yer's draft went at pick 13.
My point is this - if the Magic clear out the team and play guys like AG/Iwundu/DJ/Birch/Mario plus whomever they acquire - they may win games anyway. Hell, they may be a better team to be quite honest. And these guys need to see that they can play together and win for whatever rookie we draft here to be able to come in and have a foundation to launch off of. That's how basketball works. There is no Lebron in this draft who is going to change a team overnight.
Where a player is projected does not matter. I believe when its all said and done Young will be a top 3 pick. Therefore I want in the top 3. We cant look at mock drafts in February and assume that's how things will end up. We need to get the best odds of getting in the top 3. The only way to do that is lose. If we play the young guys and we still win then Ill accept that. As long as we put effort in tanking I can't complain. But I can and will complain if we are winning games because Dj Augustin and Mo are having good games. Your right it wouldn't be a disaster if we fell out but it would be a disappointment.
