Re: 2018 Brewers Discussion - Brewers Out On Darvish, pg 79.
Given the rumors that the Dodgers said that their Darvish offer was contingent on making moves to get under the tax threshold, even though Haudricourt is a boob most of the time, I do think I may believe him on this. The Cubs were literally the only large market in the bidding and I think Stearns was trying to keep them honest.
Also, I think they'd have taken a lowballed Darvish contract to Milwaukee because I think Stearns also sees this as the offseason of opportunity given that all of the heavy hitters are sitting out the big free agent contracts.
I will walk back this theory if in the coming week(s) we see teams like Boston or the Dodgers sign themselves over the threshold with Arrieta or something, but I think that the Cubs were truly in a great spot bidding against almost no peers and Stearns had to step in and at least try to pretend that somebody could compete with their offers.

This is from Heyman and it has to be some straight from Scott Boras BS or Arrieta is going to regret this:
Darvish was the focus by that point, but with some uncertainty about whether he’d take the deal, Epstein made the call to Arrieta to see where he stood. And to no one’s surprise, while Arrieta surely appreciated the gesture, he wasn’t immediately prepared to accept a six-year deal for what was believed to be for a similar annual salary, which was important for the Cubs, who are intent on staying under the $197 million threshold that has become an impediment in the free-agent market.

Just kind of antsy to see the next flurry of moves that Darvish finally signing hopefully triggers. Can't believe we're days away from spring training with likely lots of moves to happen still for the whole league. I'd be surprised if MKE doesn't end up with a SP somehow.

So Arrieta wants MORE than Yu got? Or am I reading that wrong. Also, 6 years on Jake? Yikes. Id go 3-4 max. Hard pass.

Could also be the Cubs who were pissed by his hard-bargaining and they've released this news and they're fudging the supposed offer a bit as well but trying to tell the public that they were trying to be loyal to their old friend.

Yeah, that could be it too. The whole wording of that statement was very vague, probably on purpose.

3 years $75-$100 mil for Arrieta with Team option year 4. Would be a sweet deal.

If Boras is intent on getting six years for Arrieta, they both should be prepared for him to miss the season because i'd be shocked to see any team give him six years,

Agree...I could see it if some desperate large market lost out on other key targets, but the large markets are not participating in this offseason save for the Cubs having room for one big deal (Darvish).

Funny (not really) to hear about Cubs, Yankees and other big market teams trying to stay under $197 million while the Brewers, at most, can go to around $110 or so. I hate baseball's salary structure. Looking forward to Harper in our division next year.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

The Red Sox are looking for a bat, but even they are balking at giving JD Martinez and Boras the number of years they want.
Given nobody else seems heavily in on Martinez, Boston can sit back and not negotiate against themselves.

I think since Boston is already over, they may be willing to just sit in the tax again and pay up for Martinez after his price comes down from having minimal competition as you say.
They are the only possible big market left and it’s still not totally clear that they’re willing to spend yet...maybe they trade themselves back under the threshold, but they probably will go for Martinez eventually.

At least they are trying to stay under 197 and not 300. Baby steps lol

Well all of those teams will likely rocket back up next year. Just trying to reset the lux tax penalty.

Apparently Stearns responding to a question about Braun replied with, "We have him penciled in at 1B vs LHP at the moment"
