It's tough, because there are only a handful of QBs actually worth that kind of cap hit...but without at least an average QB (which I believe Cousins is), your team isn't going anywhere, and it's really difficult to find that true franchise QB in the draft, because those guys only come along every so often. So for teams that just don't have a viable option at QB, what do they do? Just keep going into the draft hoping that this is the year they get their franchise QB, or do they overpay a QB that's proven that they can win you games, but has also proven that they're not elite? It stops you from surrounding this average QB with the talent necessary to win it all, but it also stops you from being a terrible team that keeps hoping to cash in at the draft, which is even worse when you realize that a lot of these bad teams are partly in that position because they suck at drafting.
