Like always with Donovan, it's about how he's using players. If Melo were to play the Kanter role, his overall impact on the team would probably be better. Play him as an offensive force to feast on lesser units, use him situationally with the starters, don't overplay him. It's quite obvious that Melo being out there was not doing anything for the team really. Especially when they needed defense and had enough offense going without him. Yet Donovan kept playing him. And even if he didn't, Grant would still be first in line to get some of his minutes.

I would take back the Melo trade and re-sign Taj while somehow shedding some other deadweight.

The PG trade was absolutely the right move IMO.

What about Rudy Gay? Weren't you guys about to sign up but couldn't come up with a deal?
I remember Kanter posting about him on twitter

They could have had him for the MLE instead of Patterson. So, in theory, they could have kept Taj and added Gay. Although I don't think Taj was ever going to resign with OKC and was going to Minny even if OKC had been willing to pay him.

Thunder only had taxpayer MLE, didn't they? Gay's on full MLE in San Antonio.

It was rumored he would have taken the taxpayer MLE with OKC. The problem was OKC had no way to do that after signing Patterson. There were also talks of a S&T with Sacramento, but Sacramento opted for nothing over what OKC was offering. Which again goes back to the lack of assets OKC has that they couldn't get a team to take an "asset" for free, although I think they would have also had to take Singler's contract.

Assuming they would have been able to pay Taj and do a S&T for Gay they would be better off then they are with Melo and they would have a lower payroll. It also might not have made the Roberson injury a season killer.

Also signing Ronnie Price and waiving him, could have used the money on someone like Tyreke Evans maybe?
