I am very pleased with our rebuild. I think Dunn, Lavine and Lauri is a great start-and I see Grant, Bobby and Nwaba as elite bench players. We obviously need a SF and a C.
I am still praying we get into the top 6-but let's say we stay at 7 or 8 and get either Bridges (I really don't like Young for us).
My idea has been to trade the 2019 pick with little or no protection to try to get a 2nd lottery pick. We keep the NO pick too-to add depth. We can throw in Valentine and absorb bad deal. Add Carter to Bridges, plus a wildcard at 2019 and roll forward. Here is why:
1-I think Pax wants a 1 year rebuild-and the 2019 playoffs are doable. Might be a 7/8 seed and first round exit, but that would be fine with me
2-the 2018 draft looks great, and the 2019 draft looks weak. I know, drafts look better and soon get overhyped most years-but this year has a ton of talent, and the big names for 2019 are not as impressive
3-There is little chance that we get a top FA this summer-PG13 would obviously be a great fit, but he's not coming. Signing secondary FA's is often a recipe for disaster. Better to use of cap space for now to absorb some bad deals.
4-Dunn, Lavine, Nwaba, Bobby, Lauri, Lopez are competitive guys-we don't want multiple years of losing. Trading the 2019 pick is like Cortez burning the ships-no going back-gotta win now.
5-As a fan, I HATE hoping my team loses. I was a bit upset we "blew" it last night with Dallas, and most of us feel the same way. We need to starting trying to win right away-it would hurt the young guys to know the organization is trying to tank again starting in Jan, 2019.
Therefore-ideas
Suns, Memphis, Orlando, ATL, Sac, Dallas are all no gos-they will pick top 7 (hope we squeeze in there)-no reason to call
#8-Clev if LBJ is staying, we absorb a bad deal or 2 and can add Valentine.
#9-NY I would take back and cut (not stretch) Noah, but not sure if they would, with KP's injury
#10-Philly Best spot-we send Valentine and absorb Bayless-I would offer the 2019 pick unprotected
#11 Char tough one I would take MKG off their hands, but his deal is not terrible. Wouldn't touch Batum
#12 Clippers (Detroit pick)-possible, if they want to keep Jordan and get a FA Boban, Wesley Johnson and Austin Rivers are all bad deals, and expire in 2019
So, I would examine these deals, using our pick as a sweetener with little/no protection (depending on the deal). Playoffs in 2019 or bust!
