From afar with all the national team stuff it almost seems like Australia is trying to back Ben into a corner where he looks like a jerk if he doesn't participate. I don't get the sense that there's much of a collaborative back and forth. Maybe I'm wrong.
Hard to believe that he hasnt been consulted as an event of this magnitude would require the support of the state government and I doubt that they'd commit without some assurances
Why would they get any assurances though? The fact they are playing the US team should be enough to sell out the game... it's not all about Ben Simmons although I get 80% of the crowd will be bandwagoners there to see him... which deep down will make me kinda chuckle inside if he doesn't turn up.
It's fairly normal for Australia to play the USA in lead up games to the World Cup and Olympics... this is nothing new. It is just in the past the games have tended to be played in the US or Europe as that is where the world championships or Olympics have always been played.
This time the world cup is in China so it makes more logical sense for the game to be played in Australia which is closer geographically than the US.
Put it this way I saw the promos for the game released by Basketball Australia and newspapers already showing images of Lebron, Curry and Durant. I can guarantee they've seeked no assurances from those players that they will be in Australia for this game because I can almost guarantee they won't be.
If people buy tickets expecting Simmons and co to be there and they choose not to.... they should blame themselves for getting their hopes up not the players.
Yeah, had a look at the tickets on line and at $1000 aud for good seats it is a huge risk if you are a casual supporter and want to see a particular player, whether if he LBJ, Simmons or Curry. Throw in the fact that the court will be a temporary dro-in in the middle of a afl field and you start to question the value. If you are not up close, forget it.
I think I’ll wait until I can catch a game in the states.
