How are both possible?

It's up to Morey to figure it out.

I'd offer him 4 years, $160 million. Why bid against themselves? Literally nobody can offer him more money or a better winning situation. Plus no state income tax in Texas. He's going to what, turn that down to make less money on a worse team out of spite?

I came in here to post this. I don't know why teams automatically pay the max when they can still be the highest bidder on a smaller deal. I'd go up to 4/180 at most, if he wants to make less money on a third team in three years, let him.

This is so obviously the right call. If CP3 really took an $11M haircut to play in Houston this year ( ), $157M + $11M is all they need to pay (with $180M being generous). If the drama queen cries let him go end his career as a nobody on some garbage team.

3 years / $100M with the 3rd year a PO seems reasonable...he can still opt out if he's producing at a high level.

This was my immediate thought when I heard he wanted a max. Pay him the max he can get anywhere else.

On a 1 year deal - just to knock off GSW one time? No way LeBron spends 5 years in Houston, right?

Off another injury too.

Let's see if CP3 really cares about winning-- if he does, giving some sort of discount should help the team? Or maybe that doesn't even make a dent?

Interested to see a computation for the Rockets' cap, comparing a discounted rate vs. this mentioned max-- and how that affects the other signings for their team.

When you think about it though, there probably are quite a few teams that would offer him a max...not for 5 years though, probably not even 4...

Why not? 1 ring alone is probably worth it - but afterward, he is still playing with another superstar even if CP3 becomes washed up, The Rockets are among the best ran franchises in the league and Houston is a big market.

What's the real down side?

No way Morey commits to 5 years of LeBron / CP3, either.

Only the Rockets can give him a max contract though. Only they can offer 5 years. Other teams can only max him out at 4 years, $157.

You don't give a 33 year old constantly injured point guard a 200 million dollar max contract. That's just insane. It's not like Paul has any other options. Lowball him and let him cry about it. What are you telling me players are going to refuse to sign with the Rockets if they do that? lmao

Exactly...

He most likely is not getting this deal. If he does okay whatever, say what you want to say.... but I dont see why we would do it. Like what's in it for us?

Kyle Lowry, Paul Millsap, Jimmy Butler, and Demarcus Cousins all wanted the supermax too. And yet somehow they didn't get it...

Absolutely no problem with his deal starting at the max, as long as it also has 5% decreases annually (4-year deal total)

Or he can get a flat max, 3-year deal.

Those would be my best offers if I'm being pretty generous (on behalf of Houstons management).

Dude is 33 and has injury issues. Those 2 offers would be nice overpays for him at this point in his career, hopefully, Houston can get him on better deals than those. The thought of a 5-year max with bird-right increases at 8% is absolutely Ludacris. 53 million at 38 years old? Why would Houston destroy their future like that? Paul has, in all likeliness, 1 more great year if we are lucky, then a significant decline each year after like all players do at the ages around the ages of 35+.

He'll get max because LBJ will not go to Houston. He has to stay in the east, unless he were to make his way to San Antonio, which would be his best shot to take out GSW, and get the finals. Cap space would be tight, but in theory the Spurs could sign him, but they would have to sign him after trading away gasol and a few other players, and keeping the rights to Parker and Manu. However, I really dislike LBJ, and I don't want to have him anywhere near my team.

The rockets are done. They missed their opportunity. Game 7 at home? Your not getting that chance again. Time to move aside and let Laker nation Rule once again.

I don't see OLD CP3 being healthier than young or prime CP3. If the Rockets give him that much money they will regret it.
