The qualifying offer is less. Why would you take that over full MLE?
Because more teams will have cap space next summer and they won't have to deal with the RFA waiting period because he'll be unrestricted. There are more teams with max cap space than there are players that are worth it, several players are going to get overpaid because of that - Smart is a prime candidate to be one of them.
What if Smart takes MLE but only on a 1 year deal? He makes more this year than the QO plus he sets himself up for an irrational market next year.
