Ressler lied publicly to protect his employees. The truth emerged over time, though:

David Aldridge wrote:Atlanta Hawks trying to rise above recent bout of franchise discord

After a banner 2014-15 season, franchise has suffered from muddled direction on and off court

The Hawks’ first-round loss to the Washington Wizards continued a disturbing trend line south for the franchise. And the team’s dysfunction was made plain this week when Budenholzer gave up his title of President of Basketball Operations, while GM Wes Wilcox was reassigned within the organization.

Translation from ownerspeak: Budenholzer had too much on his plate, and Wilcox wasn’t getting things done to my satisfaction.

It was a poorly kept secret in league circles that Budenholzer and Wilcox weren’t seeing eye to eye on the direction of the team. It seems it was more philosophical than personal. But because of their differences, the Hawks couldn’t seem to commit to a direction over the last year and a half.

Barely .500 at Christmas, Atlanta then looked like it would start rebuilding in full...But after hemming and hawing, the Hawks took Millsap off the trading block, a move that reflected the divisions between Budenholzer and Wilcox.

Sources said Wilcox wanted to move Millsap and go all-in on the rebuild, focusing on the team’s young talent like Schroeder, Hardaway and rookies Taurean Prince and DeAndre’ Bembry. But Budenholzer, who had the final say on personnel moves, and who had approved the trade of Teague to Indiana last summer, nixed any more potential deals.

“It was kind of a Game of Thrones kind of thing,” said one observer who is familiar with the parties.

The biggest indicators that Ressler has stayed out of Schlenk's way: Paul Millsap.

David Aldridge wrote:Millsap’s future is first and foremost. (No matter who is picked as GM, Millsap will be dealing directly with Ressler on his contract going forward, I’m told.) Budenholzer and the owners want to do everything possible to re-sign him -- “there’s no disagreement on whether we’re going to try and keep him, and whether he’s great for the Atlanta Hawks,” Ressler said.

It is important to note that Schlenk’s title includes head of basketball operations. Yes, principal owner Tony Ressler will sign off on major decisions. However, Schlenk was hired with a championship pedigree to continue this franchise’s goal of winning an NBA title.

Schlenk will have many decisions to make from the start; Paul Millsap will be the first step in the new direction of the franchise.

“Listen, he runs basketball operations,” Ressler told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution when asked if he will have final say in a decision on Millsap. “I did not bring him in here for me to make basketball decisions. I hope that is as clear as I can be. Yes, every ownership has to sign off on numbers, on (salary) caps, on (luxury) tax. Yes, I will sign off on the business. I promise you I did not bring Travis in here so I can make basketball decisions.”

Ownership and Budenholzer each wanted to keep Millsap, by all accounts. But Schlenk comes in an ATL doesn't even make a Free Agent offer. Clearly Schlenk's call.

Paul Millsap wrote:It was pretty simple, Denver, they came and they’ve been wanting me for years. They made that known. The presentation that they gave me, it felt comfortable, it felt real. At the end of the day it was going to be the team that I felt most comfortable with and Atlanta. Atlanta decided to go another direction. They didn’t want to make an offer. So it was pretty simple. I thought I meant a bit more than that to [the Hawks]. But it is what it is.

thats what I was going to say, Ressler made it clear after Budcox was over that he will not be making these decisions. To me there are three possibilities
1. He was a new owner and tried to stick his hands in things too much at first, but then after the backlash, he recognized that he was wrong and needs to let the GM do his job...
2. He had to step in and stick his hands into the situation b/c Wilcox and Bud needed someone to intervene and take charge b/c of the power struggle and bickering.
3. Like Jamaal said, he lied to protect his staff and took full responsibility, then fired them.

I think its possible it is a little of all the above. I am not sure. However, the latest info we have on how Ressler sees his role is what Jamaaliver just quoted, and that is that he does not make basketball decisions. He lets Schlenk do that.

I am not worried about Ressler, honestly. not right now at least.

All this proves is that I gave him a chance. As long as he's here there's always room for redemption but I'm watching his azz.

It's either TS oe Ressler, but I still don't like any of the moves made since last summer and I can absolutely provide other options. I hold out on the Trae trade. Need to get the pick and see how it / they develop. Every other move.... :curse: :curse: :curse:
