The Capulator by ShamSports is a great tool to play a with team's financials. It allows you to explore the salary ramifications of re-signing, waiving, buyouts, stretching, accepting/declining options, etc.
none of the RFAs will be available via free agency. I'd say the best case scenario is signing Irving and Leonard as FAs, and then signing both Harris and Beverly using their bird rights. we'll probably be way over tax though.
I think we are making a trade to bring in the big fish. The free agents will only be a factor once we find that center piece after trade deadline and which of our youth comes through to define the positional need as well as what type of player to sign. We may simply need role players, we may need robin, but godforbid, please not be in a situation where we need to find the Batman via free agency
The NBA Has Already Moved on to the 2019 Offseason
The Clippers are in position to take a giant leap forward in the very near future. The capable veterans that make up the bulk of the roster should keep the Clippers respectable next season—the merits of such a strategy, during a time when every other West team wants to win, are debatable—but the biggest value for most of them comes from what they are not: signed past next season. As of now, with Montrezl Harrell’s restricted free agency still unresolved, only two Clippers players are due fully guaranteed salaries next summer. Add in their two recent first-round picks and Bradley’s partial guarantee, and the team could have enough for two max contracts in the summer of 2019, when franchise players like Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, and Kyrie Irving may hit the market.
The problem is the Clippers won’t be the only team holding a bag or two next offseason. With some of the gross overpays signed in the boom of 2016 coming off teams’ books, and the cap projected to jump about $7 million after flattening out the past two summers, there will be plenty of cash to go around. As many as 11 teams can open up enough cap space for at least one max deal in 2019, including all seven teams in the top five U.S. media markets, if they don’t add long-term salary in this offseason’s home stretch. Most aren’t being coy about how they plan to use it, either. Knicks president Steve Mills said before this year’s free agency began that his team will be back in the star-chasing business in 2019. New Knicks coach David Fizdale doubled down on Wednesday: “As we get our culture in place, [Kristaps Porzingis] gets healthy, we start moving into next summer, I really feel like we’ll have the bricks in place to make some big moves.”
Every team would love to easy-bake a contender in one summer. But while the Heat’s success in 2010 free agency led them to four straight Finals and paved a path to where we are today in star-player movement, the Knicks also set a course for irrelevance by settling for Amar’e Stoudemire when their hard sell to James went nowhere. The possibility of teams having money next year but no one to spend it on seemed to be on agents’ minds this past week, as long-term security was eschewed en masse in favor of trying again in next year’s more player-friendly market. Through Thursday morning, there have been 29 one-year deals, four one-year deals with player options for a second year, two one-year deals with nonguaranteed second years, one one-year deal with a team option for a second year, and Bradley’s one-year deal with a partial guarantee in the second. Most of the major restricted free agents also remain in limbo, and some could wind up playing out next season on the one-year qualifying offer.
AD is the guy I want more than any other in the league. I'm about 95% sure he won't be in New Orleans long-term, so the opportunity is there. He's pretty much the reason I'm not overly concerned about what happens with Kawhi or what our record is the next couple of years. It's AD or bust for me.
Just because the Clippers will have nearly $60 million in cap space does not mean they'll strike gold with their free agents. Nobody is willing to come to the Clippers now for fear of being back stabbed just like they did when they wooed Blake Griffin and later traded him... even if they did it for the right thing, and boy did it hurt them. Losing history be darned (can't use curse words due to RealGM profanity settings), the Clippers were forced to accept the fact that highlight reel players net you losing seasons more often than winning ones. Jerry West saw it all too often: the Warriors were forced to trade fan favorite Monta Ellis because they were going nowhere, and they paid for it with big boos from the Bay Area fan base. Only did they start making the playoffs consistently and finally winning a title in their third consecutive playoff visit were they forgiven by those same fans who booed the front office.
So Clippers say they're going to compete, but every blogger in the web projects the Clippers are going to tank. Even one commentator on this board suggested Jerry West brought in players that were tailor-made for Doc River's coaching weaknesses as a way to tank unintentionally. If the Clippers have a single-digit winning record and the loss tally is way up there in the 70s, just for a shot at a no. 1 pick with the belief that no. 1 picks guarantee you a superstar, free agents are going to avoid them for the foreseeable future. They did this before with Michael Olowokandi - thought he would be a superstar, believed in his coming of age story, and were disappointed that he failed to backup on his stalwart college run. Further exasperating the situation, if the want to compete is true, they'll certainly fall short, an above .500 record where they'll fall one or two games away from 8th seed, giving them a technical losing season. They'll most certainly get another late lottery pick after all the good ones have been chosen by the teams who lose well. This is elite mediocrity caused by a split personality between the front office and the coaching staff, and if Jerry West isn't keeping the two departments honest with each other, hello 16-year playoff drought. So what are they doing, tanking for a pick or competing for a playoff spot?
The answer is a shocker: they're exhibiting.
Think of the 2018-19 season as a trial run. Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and Jerome Robinson will be showcased throughout the season. The team is going to miss the playoffs, but they'll have tons of assets for other teams to drool their delights on, not to mention the rookies gaining a feeler for the NBA. If the rookies perform well, they'll have suitors to take bad contracts off their hands to improve their cap space, maybe help teams desperate for a playoff run or to complete their championship quest. Otherwise, the Clippers will have already planned their Microsoft Powerpoint presentation for future free agents: "look at the skill set and determination of Shai Guy and Brock-Rob - now picture Gilgeous dialing dimes and defending, Jerome javelining the ball into the hole like in a joust, and you in the middle surprising the opposition with a Sudden Death Shot for the ultimate V."
If the Clippers want to make great use of their cap space, they will need a face. Not necessarily a face of the franchise, but a face that expresses possibility. Shai-Guy and Brock-Rob will give them that, but it's up to them to perform. Exhibit well, and the 29 other teams will have millions of reasons to worry about the Clippers in 2019-20.
IDK how much we'd save but a buyout/stretch of Danilo's contract next year seems to be a be a likely possibility, especially if he plays less than 65 games this year. Who knows, as an "expiring" maybe his contract becomes tradeable? I see us trading for a young disgruntled/under performing player with great potential in a better environment, and adding one max player in fa as a possibility. If we could manage to extend and keep Tobias out of the trade, we'd be ready to compete for the po again.
