Do you consider it progress that most of the Japanese and US media called Naomi Osaka a Japanese tennis player vs a Black or Black Japanese player?
TBH, I always hated the terms white and black and Brown. I'm part white and refuse to call myself white. If i'm in a hurry i ssimply describe myself as American. If someone actually shows interest I I'm part italian and spanish and native american. But i understand that the score keepers feel the need to keep score as the muster up various statistics. I use the terms for simplicity solely because the score keepers use the terms.
IN regards to the tennis player...I beleive that people identifiy with whatever they want or feel. Same with gender. So its 100% up to her the rest of us should respect that to her in public and in person to her. and she says she is an american that was born in japan and grew up with a japanese mother and Haitian father. Which is what the sports people should recognize.
I dont know if she is just trying to capitalize on her potentially larger fan base??? And if so? so what! that is her right if those groups accept her as one of their own and buy more of her "stuff." Good for her if that happens for her.
In terms of analysis and reality? she has lived in the USA since she was 3. Which makes her as american as any other american on the planet. So i personally am not following the potential distancing of being both black and american or better said african american. And i'm not sure she was distancing herself at all from any anything...seemed like the tennis community was trying to paint her as being japanese. odd.
The oddest thing however was that Serena Williams (my former favorite tennis player of all time male or female) was such a baby over losing or not playing well that she through multiple tantrums while getting her ass handed to her by what was likely her childhood idol. Which always sucks when you put someone on a pedestal and they let you down...in Naomi's case this was beyond a let down...this was as close to a kanye west, "imma let you finish" moment without going all in. When it's someone else's moment just sit down and STFU! If you or someone else was "robbed" of an award or moment the public will rant and whine away for you.
