Agreed. Oubre to a capped out contender works best so they have RFA rights on him.

Call us if you want to get out of Porter's contract. ;)

So this one appeared on a Ringer pod...
-Wiz get Mike Conley
-Wiz trade Wall (add in Rivers to make salaries work)

Memphis gets a name to put in bright lights, which they’re in dire need of. And Wall’s 5 year contract means he’s not going to bail on them.

Washington gets the anti-Wall: a mature leader to pull the team together, and turns Wall’s monstrous 5 year deal into a better 3 year one.

Why wouldn’t we do this?

Seems like the absolute last move the Grizz need to make right now.

Mike Conley's contract would save us 10 million a year, and obviously more than that in tax--but I don't think that's enough of a discount from Wall to really make a lot of difference in who we can bring in. Talent wise, Wall is better, but perhaps Conley playing more within himself would result in a more consistent team. More likely than not we're still between 40-49 wins a game and Ted is just saving a little more money. We also never get another national TV game again.

Second year in a row that Bojan Bogdanovic has been a huge part of a decent Pacers team btw.

http://bkref.com/tiny/zreWE

Porter has less turnovers, significantly more blocks, steals, and rebounds, but Bojan made 70 more threes and free throws. There's no doubt Porter is the better player. Not debating that. His defense is better than Bojans for sure. But 10.5 million vs 26,27,28 million? The Pacers seem to have been able to find a way to minimize Bojan's defensive woes.

Very Ernie -- guy goes undrafted, & instead of signing him you get him in a trade 4 months later! :)

However bad Houston's start, lets assume that the R1 you'd get in the deal would be very low. In which case, to add the "Ernie-ness," we'd be trading the #19 pick in the 2015 draft, plus a mid-R2 pick that year, for a low 2019 R1 pick & a guy you could have had for free.

Like I say, very Ernie.

Probably so, but it's much better than losing Oubre for nothing - which will likely happen next offseason. It might be smarter to make it a 2020 pick. Hey, they say hindsight is 2020, so maybe there's a benefit there.

Agree with Ruz.
EG sucks, but you cant discount control. Simply put, you have to pay a significant increase to retain good players going into their 2nd contract. If that player isnt a star, then you're better off cashing in on them before they walk or force you match a bad contract.
The Bucks would of been Way BETTER off trading Parker last year, or the Spurs with Kyle Anderson.

Im not speaking to the Rockets trade per se, but the thought process behind it.

All good points.

OTOH, stars are not the only players to whom you give a second contract. If we can't extend players we acquire as rookies, because of our 3 overwhelmingly large contracts, the result is, essentially, an "age chasm" behind those 3 guys. We can draft guys, but the better they are the surer it is that we'll have to let them go.

I'm not suggesting there is any easy way around this kind of problem....

I guess one thing would be not to pay a combined $43m to your 4th-7th highest paid players when they are guys like Mahinmi, Morris, Rivers & Smith. Yes, Kieff is playing well so far this year -- don't want to forget to mention that.

But, overall, I wonder if there is another such combination of 4th-7th highest-paid guys on any team in the league who make as much while delivering so little per dollar.

PIF, Agreed that not only stars are extended, but Oubre's case has two problems having nothing to do with us:
1) The cap increase and 1 year contracts means there is a TON of caps space. Someone will give him 12-15M per year
2) He is an athletic wing with "Upside". Some team/GM will fall in love with his upside. I could see a short term prove it deal like Parker signed. I.E. 3/50M contract with the 3rd year a TO.

The Rockets are off to a horrible start. Here's a very doable idea.

They are missing Ariza and defense on the wings. They don't have a big who can space the floor.

The ESPN Trade Machine indicates Washington loses the deal. I don't think so. Clark is a good player. Gordon is the best player in the deal. Nene can start at C in case Howard's not going to be able for a while.

Thoughts?

Getting 3 years of a broken down Conley doesnt exactly sound like a win.

The problem is that this puts us at $142m next year -- way over the tax w/ 10 players.

- Trade Oubre + Smith to NOP for Johnson, Diallo, 1st
- Trade Rivers & 2020 1st to Sacramento for McLemore & 2020 2nd.

Gets us under tax this year.

Wall / Sato
Beal / McLemore / Brown
Otto / Johnson / Brown
Kieff / Green
Howard / Ian / Diallo

Summer:
Bring back Howard
Stretch Mahinmi
Resign Sato & Diallo...Green too I guess
make two picks in the 20's
Use Full MLE on 1-2 players

Wall
Beal
Sato
Otto
Howard

Bench: MLE, 2 1st round picks, Brown, Diallo, Green... Bi-Annual exception too

That MLE and 2 picks could be a nice reboot... and still doesnt jeopardize a full rebuild should we so choose

McLemore is one of the few guards in the league as bad as (maybe even worse than) Austin Rivers. Wes Johnson can't play. Diallo is extremely limited. That team misses the playoffs. Ok with you?

Sato becomes our starting 3 -- ? Otto is a full-time 4 -- ? Why do we re-sign Diallo?

Plus, we have not solved our core problem of 3 enormous salaries.

Btw, I would play Bryant over Diallo; you don't mention him.

1) The point is to get a 1st for Oubre. The other pieces are filler to get us under tax and keep our roster balanced.
Diallo and Bryant are about equal as prospects. Worth a shot for the remainder of the year

2) I know McLemore is bad. He is simply filler to make the trade go through.

3) Again, dont care about Diallo... but he just turned 22 (Almost a year younger than Oubre), rebounds/hustles, hits his FT's and plays D. Let him and Bryant duel it out as the potential big to bring back next year for cheap.

4) Team misses the Playoffs?!? Huh. If you think the downgrade of Oubre to Wes Johnson cost us the playoffs, then you think we are a 7-8 seed anyway. Who cares? ... But Wes is a better defender than Oubre at this point and think the drop off in Wins is 1, 2 at most.... even though RPM/BPM had him as a better player last year. Sooo?

5) You say "We haven't solved our Core Problem..." I think I have. We have two problems. 1 is obvious and clear, the 2nd is a little more murky.

Problem 1, we are in the repeater tax with not enough young prospects/support players to mitigate our 3 Heavy salaried players. This trade compliments our Big 3 with Sato, Brown, 2 2019 1st round picks, and a MLE player who will will also be a key piece...
So yes, I fixed that problem as we are out of the tax this year and 20/21... Giving us enough time to figure through Problem 2...

Problem 2, Is our Big 3 good enough to compete even with a strong group of talent surrounding them? It appears the answer is no, but we are still working through that it seems. Solving the 1st problem allows us more time to figure through the 2nd. Whether that'd be a breakout by one of them, or a trade/reload of 1 or 2 of them.

Gordon is going to be traded in order for that team to replace the defensive intensity lost when both Ariza and Mbah ah Moute departed.

They don't want to keep losing the same way. They have to score 120 a night just to compete. I've made a VERY GOOD TRADE IDEA imo

Smith
Morris
SATORANSKY

TOMAS IS POTENTIALLY A MORE VALUABLE PLAYER THAN GORDON bcuz he is both a playmaker and a defender. Satoransky will kill it under a superior coach like Mike D'antoni.

Morris is perfect for the Rockets. The antithesis of the bum Carmelo Anthony is in terms of agitating things. Markieff is a very capable defender...at times. Give him a fresh start with Houston...let Jeff Green have the best moments possible for the Wizards.

True.

The solution is that Gordon and Beal are the Wizards backcourt once THE NEXT DEAL goes down.

Wall and Ian for Chandler, space junk, and maybe some shrimp chips with a draft pick.
