I am sorry this all BS. You can walk into your job and quit and go work somewhere else whenever you want, your boss can't trade you to Toledo, he or she actually can't fire you unless they want to pay you for a couple of months. It is great to be an American.
The NBA is the NBA and guys make a ton of money but very few of us have a job that says by the way Jim your going to Minneapolis for the next couple of years have a good time. Then when you go to your new boss and say Boss you know this isn't working out for me, the guys I am working with and me don't get along and as soon as I can I am heading to LA or Miami. The response is good to know we will send you their sooner if it works for us but until then we are going to be make you look like an ****.
Not entirely true. He has a contract with the T'Wolves. Like a lot of professionals, the last contract I signed contained a non-compete clause. If I left my employer I could not work in any related industry for 3 years. He cannot just refuse to play without risking consequence.
Do I think Minnesota should trade his contract? Yes. Do they have the right to trade his contract for what they deem equal compensation? Yes.
Everything has consequences. Non compete clauses are bogus as well. The NBA has perverted FA to hide behind the piles of money they give guys to make it seem okay. Butler is actually a perfect case. He was a late first rounder who made himself an All Star having made a little over 5mil in 4 years. He hit restricted FA and his team told everyone they would match any offer up to the max for his services so nobody signed him to an offer sheet and was essentially left to resign with the Bulls or except a pittance of his value for another season. 2 years into his 5 year deal he is dealt to MINN without his own consent. They offer him a 50 cents on the dollar extension in the off season that he turns down and tells them to trade him to one of his preferred destinations because he isn't going to resign with them, they attempt to trade him and can't find a deal they like.
The Wolves are not behaving in a very genuine way in this situation tons of mixed messages and nonsense that is going to invite Butler to do the same. Starting with the fact that they apparently told Butler take Wednesday off, no idea where the story line of that this was Butler's new tactic came from but like I said it is all part of the we are going to trade you but you make you like and ass in the mean time. I am not saying Butler is acting real classy in this situation he isn't, he may have been behind the story. But when you continue to have a system that Free Agents aren't free to sign were they want for however much they can get this is what it will bread.
More and more I think the soccer model makes the most sense, get rid of the asset trades and get down to business. If a player under contract wants out post him and then take the highest bid and move on. Make "trades" business transactions.
