MLE targets in the offseason
How much do we have to spend?
Who's out there that would sign for what we have to offer?
Obvious needs are a starting SF and/or SG. PG too if Ish leaves.

I like Darren Collison, maybe split the MLE between McConnell and a SF like Aminu, Ariza would be nice too.

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
We have $15M under the tax threshold (not counting Robinson's TO). 9M is roughly the MLE(4 year contract max), 5.5M is the tax-payers MLE(3 yr contract max), we should have the bi-annual exemption to use as well which is about $4M and I believe can only be two years in length.
If we might want to go into the tax - we only use the tax payers MLE. This might be smart because we could look to make a big trade during the season and don't want to be blocked by not being able to take on more money coming our way in the deal.
If we use the MLE on a PG, we let Ish walk and then could only use the BAE on a wing. If we keep Ish we could use the MLE on a wing. If we use the full MLE we could only pay Ish 5M. If we use the tax payers MLE we could pay him more and still stay under the tax.

Can we sign Reggie Bullock with the MLE? I think he's worth it and there's no reason not to come back to Detroit where his career flourished.

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
It looked there were some decent SF options on the free agency list. Personally, Marcus Morris would be the guy I meet with on midnight of day of free agency. He has been playing great so idk if the MLE will be enough for him but he would a PERFECT fit if he came back here. He is a locker room leader, can get his own shot, shoot 3s, and defend on the perimeter. He is pretty versatile too.

I don't know if he's gettable for the MLE, but it certainly won't be what he's looking for, meaning you're not getting him for that on a midnight signing, at least I'd think, especially not at midnight.
I'd say any contract we'd be able to get someone to sign at midnight on day one is probably a signing we'll regret.

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
I feel like anybody we are able to sign for the MLE will simply be looked at as another bad contract. I'd rather overpay for a crappy player on a 2-yr contract than give the full MLE to a mediocre player. We are screwed regardless; let's at least attempt to mitigate the long term damage in the hopes that 3-4 yrs down the line Gores decides to cash out.

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
MLE doesn't have to be a four year deal it could be a 3 year deal with a team option in the third year.
Reggie Bullock, Marcus Morris, JJ Reddick(likely a lux tax casualty of Philly signing Harris and Butler), Brook Lopez(could backup both Dre and Blake and do a big 3 rotation), Willie Caulie-Stein, Rudy Gay, Thad Young, Danny Green, Terrance Ross, Aminu, Oubre, Ariza, Matthews, Beverly, Bazemore are all guys we should consider. I think part goes to Ish to keep as backup PG if we can keep him for less than $6 million we should have full MLE for someone.

You mean like Josh Smith?

And yeah, he ain't gettable with the MLE. Not by this team, anyway.

Yes we can and he should be our #1 target.

We don't need to use the MLE to bring Ish back, we have hiis bird rights.

Sorry I mean part of our money under the luxury tax level. Bring back Ish, MLE FA, 1st round draft pick and then likely the rest of our players will have to be at league minimum salary.

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
We have 10 players under contract already next year, so 11 is Ish, 12 is our 1st rounder, 13 is our MLE FA signing, and the last two would likely be league minimum salary guys. Perhaps a league minimum center and PG.

The rules confuse my tiny brain. Using the "tax payers" means we're in the luxury tax? But we're not.... Hmmm

Re: MLE targets in the offseason
Best strategy is identify a few guys that are on our "dream list" for MLE (Bullock, Morris, etc.), make the offer but also not overreact if they say No Thanks. Then, Sit back and watch the dominos fall and look to pickup guys off the bargain bin like we did with Zaza and GR III. We do not need to offer top dollar to anyone in our financial position. We need to be prudent and not pick up any more "bad contracts".

Wasn't Mook mostly disliked by folks here when he played for the Pistons because he would block Stanley's PT and was sort of a ball hog?

I thought he was a ballhog. He eventually grew on me a little, but I don't recall being super upset when we lost him.
