Yes, Russell did take a zen-like approach as soon as he was traded, but Kenny and his staff are also pretty forceful in making sure that you do things in the manner they want or you're not going to play. If it wasn't for the coaching staff and the performance team who knows whether he takes the next step that he seems to have taken.
The Lakers not having the structure in place to guide Russell is a 100% failure on their part.
Kudos to the Nets front office for recognizing what Russell could be, kudos to the coaching staff/training team for providing the necessary structure, kudos to the veterans on this team for helping to guide and push him, and kudos to Russell for maturing, embracing his new situation with an open mind, and being humble enough to be coached.
My point more has to do with the Nets being the perfect situation for him rather than the Lakers not being the right place. I think there are more franchises and teams with structures similar to the Lakers in terms of player development and support than those similar to the Nets.
In short, I don't know if we see the same improvement from him if he'd gone to the Suns, Pistons, or Magic.
D'Angelo's approach as been as close to perfect since being traded here, but I think the Nets are one of the few teams who have the right people in place and the right system to allow DLo to thrive.
