Maybe because DAL didn't have young potential stars with them, but only some veterans and a still competitive Dirk at this time.
Now, they have Doncic and Porzingis. If they add a top5 pick in this year draft, they have two potential star and this top5 pick to build around, and since Doncic and Porzingis already shown they can play for a playoffs team, the stars should look at DAL differently than the previous years...

That's right, but people want the 6th pick, not DAL finishing with the 6th worst record, which means DAL not getting picked by the 4 lottery choice, and DAL finishing at 7th or 8th would decrease their odds at landing a top4 pick.
If they get it, then sign one star and a good player (and they can trade Hardaway/Lee), we won't get a good pick next year, so I prefer getting a 8th pick this year, than nothing this year and the 16th next season.
Since we will have our pick this year, better choosing two players now.
Now, which I would not accept is letting DAL get the 5th worst record with ATL finishing with the 6th worst, by winning way more games than DAL... It would just be stupid.
I don't have anything to say about DAL tanking now, with the trades they made, it's logic. Which I don't want ATL management allow them to improve their odds at a top4 pick when you have the possibility to get their pick, so please be smart like DAL
