Resigning Carter-Williams: a how-to poll

Moderators: ChosenSavior, UCF, Knightro, UCFJayBird, Def Swami, Howard Mass

How does Orlando free up a roster slot to resign Carter-Williams?

1) The league grants another injury exemption to allow this
2
6%
2) The Magic waive Grant - another PG could be picked up if Augustin or Carter-Williams goes down (Caupain, for example)
22
61%
3) The Magic waive Martin - the Magic has tremendous forward depth and he is expendable
7
19%
4) The Magic waive Frazier - he is a project-player that won't get 1 minute of playoff time
5
14%
5) The Magic waive Mozgov - if he is only an expiring contract next year, the Magic could just eat his salary

6) Another player is waived

If he is, you cut Jerian Grant who is the player least likely on the roster to return next season.

If not, then you have a dilemma.

I see three options.

1) Cut Grant and take your chances with two point guards.

2) Waive Melvin Frazier jr. His contract is guaranteed next year and would be dead weight plus loss of high second-round pick investment on cap. However, he might not picked up and could be re-signed.

3) Cut Timofey Mozgov. He has one year left on his contract after this season. That big expiring could be used in a potential trade next year so it gives The Magic options although I think it is more likely that he would be cut after next year's Trading Deadline or his contract would just be allowed to expire to allot for Issac and Fultz's future extension Luxury Tax wise.

My personal choice would be to cut Grant but if not, I think Frazier should be the one waived.

Frazier is worth keeping in my opinion and Moz.... i'm ok to buy out... but i would prefer to use it than anything as you suggested. Screw it... punt grant... and go into the playoffs with just those two. Push comes to shove....gordon and fournier will be our PG. lol

Each injury contract is from a temporary exemption, and those exemptions cannot carry to the post season.

Orlando can only have 15 men for the second-season. One Magician will be waived and the pool of potential waivee's can only be: Frazier, Grant, Mozgov, and Martin.

There was a quote from PBO Weltman that he would be signed, not that he actually was signed. We know he will not be until his second 10-day contract elapses AND another Magician is waived.

Not sure the CBA implications on resigning a waived played, but hopefully the Magic can resign Briscoe this summer.

He deserves another shot. Only lost his spot because of a cruel numbers game and an injury.

I'm sure there was some conversation that was had with Briscoe that he will be brought back to training camp this summer and is part of the Magic's plans. He's injured now, so just needs to use this time to rehab and come back strong, already with the knowledge of Clifford's system. He's an excellent 3rd PG.

Fultz, MCW, Briscoe (brought back) should be our PGs for 2019-2020 season.

The only reason Briscoe got cut instead of Grant is because Briscoe is injured and won't be healthy for the playoffs. So congrats to Grant for being better than an injured 3rd string PG?
