Any time they veer from the actual books things go south a little. Same for Walking Dead.
I blame GRRM.
Last book came out 3 months after GoT started
That's just ridiculous imo like, no reason he couldn't have finished one main book in that time

For real. Don't know why it would take him 9 years and counting.
He does way too much world-building in his books. That's something you can do afterwards when you finish the actual story.
IMO, he had enough houses and characters in books 1-3 to finish up the story. But he just kept on expanding and I guess wants to make it more epic. But at this point, I'm not even sure what the main story is anymore.
His type of writing has positives and negatives
Because he doesn't plan everything out at the start, sometimes characters and plotlines feel more naturally developed because he's not trying to force it in, like look at some early drafts of Jamie's story, he's a completely different character than we got, and I would rather have this one
But he just adds so much stuff that probably is cool, but just seems unnecessary to the plot. I couldn't finish ADWD cause it was way too bloated and convoluted
You see it with the show, they just cut bait with extraneous plotlines, which is good from a narrative perspective cause it streamlines it, but the world building really suffers
It's the same problem Patrick Rothfuss is having writing Doors of Stone. Sometimes writers just write themselves into holes and struggle to get out of them
